Job summary

AMSPEC in Baton Rouge, LA seeks a Field Service Technician responsible for safe pickup, transport, and delivery of environmental samples, supplies, and lab materials between clients and the laboratory. You will support occasional field sampling events, maintain sample integrity and chain-of-custody, and assist with lab operations, while adhering to safety policies and DOT regulations.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Pick up environmental samples from client locations according to schedules.
  • Deliver sampling supplies and lab materials to clients.
  • Ensure proper handling, labeling, and preservation of samples.
  • Maintain chain-of-custody documentation.
  • Verify samples meet acceptance criteria before transport.
  • Perform occasional field sampling (groundwater, wastewater, etc.).
  • Assist lab staff with receiving, logging, and organizing samples.
  • Maintain cleanliness of vehicles and equipment.
  • Report vehicle maintenance needs promptly.
  • Communicate professionally with clients regarding pickups/deliveries.
  • Represent the lab professionally at client facilities.
  • Follow safety policies and environmental regulations.
  • Perform other duties to support operations.

Job description

The Field Service Technician is responsible for the safe and timely pickup, transport, and delivery of environmental samples, supplies, and laboratory materials between clients and the laboratory. This position also supports occasional field sampling events and assists with general laboratory operations as needed. The ideal candidate is dependable, customer-focused, and committed to maintaining sample integrity and chain-of-custody requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Pick up environmental samples from client locations according to established schedules.
  • Deliver sampling supplies, sample containers, coolers, and other laboratory materials to clients.
  • Ensure proper handling, packaging, labeling, and preservation of samples during transport.
  • Maintain complete and accurate chain-of-custody documentation.
  • Verify that all samples meet laboratory acceptance criteria before transport.
  • Perform occasional field sampling, including groundwater, wastewater, drinking water, soil, stormwater, and other environmental matrices in accordance with company procedures.
  • Assist laboratory staff with receiving, logging, and organizing samples as needed.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of company vehicles and sampling equipment.
  • Perform routine inspections of assigned vehicles and report maintenance needs promptly.
  • Communicate professionally with clients regarding sample pickups, deliveries, and scheduling.
  • Represent the laboratory professionally while working at client facilities.
  • Follow all company safety policies and environmental regulations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support laboratory operations.

Preferred
  • Previous experience in an environmental laboratory or field services.
  • Experience collecting environmental samples.
  • Familiarity with EPA sampling procedures and chain-of-custody documentation.
  • Current TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Credential) card or the ability to obtain one.
  • DOT certification or experience operating commercial vehicles is a plus.
Required Experience
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds on a regular basis.
  • Ability to load and unload coolers, sample containers, and field equipment.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and climb stairs throughout the workday.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions during field sampling events.
  • Ability to travel locally with occasional early mornings, evenings, or extended workdays as business needs require.
