Job summary

CF Rail Services is hiring a Field Service Specialist to perform on-site mobile railcar repairs with emphasis on safety and quality. You will work directly with customer facilities to deliver efficient, compliant service and maintain accurate billing data in line with AAR standards.

The role requires field travel, the ability to operate heavy equipment, and strict adherence to CFRS procedures and PPE guidelines to ensure high-quality workmanship and exceptional customer service.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED obtained and courses passed with 80%+ as coordinated by CF Rail Management.
  • FCAW welding qualification and AAR data knowledge required per procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical procedures and government regulations in English.

Responsibilities

  • Complete and maintain Field Service Apprentice functions.
  • Meet CFRS welding qualification requirements.
  • Apply AAR rules and use inspection gauges.
  • Troubleshoot at customer sites based on defect symptoms reported.
  • Operate equipment and wear PPE.
  • Travel within a 200-mile region as needed.

This role supports our CF Rail Services team. Delivering the highest-quality railcar repairs quickly and safely with uncompromising customer service, CF Rail Services is a leading railcar repair and maintenance provider offering quality repair work for railroads, private car owners, lessors, contracts agents, and shippers across North America.

The Field Service Specialist delivers exceptional customer service by providing onsite mobile repairs at customer facilities. This will be accomplished through quality workmanship, meeting AAR Requirements, while providing accurate industry standard formatted billing.

As a Field Service Specialist, Here's What You Will Do:
  • Successfully complete, perform, and maintain the Field Service Apprentice job functions.
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
  • Meet the requirements and pass CFRS’ welding procedures (3/4" plate - all position FCAW). Qualification consists of successfully passing FCAW T2 thickness – all position.
  • Knowledge of AAR Job Codes and associated data field requirements.
  • Properly use AAR Rule 1 and various inspection gages.
  • Perform trouble‑shooting diagnostics at customer locations based on defect symptoms reported
  • NDE qualified based on operational needs (BT, VT,PT,MP,RVI,UTT)
  • Documented training to set up and operate or drive equipment such as, but not limited to: forklift, man lift, crane, back hoe, skid loader, hoist or hydraulic boom.
  • Successfully complete this positions “Education/Formal Training” requirements.
  • Wear PPE in appropriate areas

Note: Responsibilities include the expectation to always act to support the interests of the department and organization and to perform other duties as assigned to ensure the successful achievement of departmental and company objectives.

Qualifications And Education Requirements
  • High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED)
  • Successfully pass the following courses with an 80% or higher score coordinated by CF Rail Management
    • AAR Interchange Rules
    • Freight Car Inspection Overview
    • Basics of Railroad Wheels
    • FRA Railroad Safety Appliance Standards (Condensed Course) Coupler & Draft Systems course
    • Guide to Freight Car Trucks course
    • Body and Truck Side Bearing Gaging and Adjustment Course
Skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suit and BRC generation software/ shop operating system.
  • Ability to deliver high level of customer service via phone and face to face interaction.

Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations in English language.

Physical Demands

Work assignments involve standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, reaching, climbing, crawling, and crouching in strained and awkward positions for prolonged periods of time at various heights up to 20 feet. Uses hands, legs, and arms to climb vertical ladders to staging or suspended platforms. Lifts, carries, and sets up equipment and components that weigh up to 50 lbs. Employee must be medically certified to wear a respirator, as well as be able to wear respirators for prolonged periods of time.

  • Ability to operate Forklifts, Mobile Service Trucks, Boom Lifts
  • Required valid driver’s licences, and ability to drive Company vehicles when necessary.
  • Ability to travel within established 200-mile region
  • Ability to travel for an extended period of time.
Work Environment

Work will be performed outdoors and indoors in all types of weather, on and around heavy equipment. The employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; fumes or airborne particles and outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. May be required to work overtime and/or varied shifts to meet the demands of the business.
