Job summary

Brooks Automation in Manassas, VA is seeking a Field Service Engineer to install, maintain and repair advanced automation systems. The role requires hands-on expertise with electro-mechanical equipment, lasers, cellular sensing devices, and microelectronics schematics.

You will diagnose complex failures, perform preventive maintenance, and coordinate with customers and internal teams. Travel domestically and internationally, with on-call duties, is expected.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree in a technical field or equivalent practical experience.
  • At least 3 years in electro-mechanical or electronics technical support and repair; military technical training is a plus.
  • Experience with lasers and sensing devices used for robotic positioning.
  • Hands-on troubleshooting with microelectronics schematics and digital circuits.
  • Proficiency with PCs and Windows/DOS-based operating systems.
  • Valid driver’s license, clean driving record, reliable transportation, and ability to obtain corporate expense card and a valid passport for the duration of employment.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, climb ladders and scaffolding, and use personal protective equipment.
  • Comfort working in awkward positions and confined spaces.
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally and to participate in emergency on-call assignments.

Responsibilities

  • We perform complex customer support work, including installation, modification, repair, and preventive maintenance of our equipment and systems.
  • We diagnose and resolve advanced equipment failures and carry out corrective actions.
  • We work with minimal supervision while following established policies and procedures to meet company and customer quality standards.
  • We may serve as a local, shift, or site lead to coordinate work direction for other service engineers and installation support.
  • We handle installation, upgrades, testing, maintenance, and preventive diagnostics across both software and hardware.
  • We engage with customers to support satisfaction, participate in operational and status meetings, and represent us in those discussions.
  • We maintain a safe and orderly work environment by following our protocols and the customers requirements.
  • We obtain required equipment service and operation certifications and submit service, status, and related reports as needed.
  • We respond quickly to changing priorities such as tool or line-down situations and broader escalations.
  • We train our employees and customer personnel on equipment operation and maintenance.
  • We mentor less experienced service engineers.
  • We drive continuous improvement initiatives to address issues for both customers and our business.
  • We identify, assess, document, and implement process improvements.
  • We prepare reports, project plans, training plans, certification matrices, and other required documentation.
  • We present information at customer sites or Brooks offices to customers and management.
  • We may support a specific site, region, or product set based on business needs.
  • We work a schedule aligned to customer requirements, including compressed work weeks, night shifts, weekends, and on-call coverage.
  • We may work in a clean room environment while wearing full cleanroom attire.
