Job description

Field Safety Representative
Safety Division
Reports To: VP of Operations
Location: Tempe, AZ - travel across Greater Phoenix
Compensation: $75,000.00 - $95,000.00 annually
POSITION SUMMARY

The Field Safety Representative is Tempe Mechanical's daily safety presence in the field - visiting active HVAC, plumbing, piping, service, JOC, and special projects work; inspecting conditions and work practices; coaching and recognizing crews; delivering assigned training; and driving corrective actions to closure. This role carries full stop-work authority to halt any Tempe Mechanical or subcontractor activity presenting an imminent or serious hazard, without prior approval and without fear of retaliation. This position enforces and verifies the safety program in the field; it does not write company safety policy.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Field Inspections & Verification
  • Complete a minimum of 3 documented inspections per month across all projects, with at least one per active project per month, increasing frequency on projects meeting an escalation trigger.
  • Verify daily Pre-Task Plans and JHAs are completed and hazard-specific; inspect fall protection, ladders, lifts, rigging, hot work, confined space, energized electrical and LOTO, excavations, silica, respirators, HazCom/SDS access, housekeeping, and heat illness controls.
  • Observe every service technician at least once per month across rooftop, mechanical room, ladder, electrical, and refrigerant work.
Authority & Corrective Action
  • Exercise full stop-work authority - stop work, tag equipment out of service, require a redone Pre-Task Plan or JHA, and require PPE before work resumes.
  • Document every finding - location, crew, hazard, requirement, correction, responsible party, and due date - and track every open item to closure, verifying corrections in person.
  • Issue disciplinary action for safety violations under company policy, coordinating with the employee's supervisor and HR, and refer suspension or termination recommendations to HR.
  • Escalate directly to the superintendent, project manager, and VP of Operations as needed.
Training & Recognition
  • Deliver assigned training and new-hire safety orientation using company materials; lead or verify weekly toolbox talks on every active project and maintain rosters and sign-in sheets.
  • Flag expired or missing certifications to management.
  • Run the field safety recognition program, recognizing crews for hazard identification, near-miss reporting, and appropriate use of stop-work authority.
Incident Response & Reporting
  • Respond to incidents, injuries, and near misses; secure the scene, get the employee care, coordinate with the designated provider, and gather facts, photos, and statements.
  • Support root-cause analysis evaluating planning, supervision, training, equipment, conditions, schedule pressure, and communication.
  • Notify management immediately of any recordable injury, hospitalization, amputation, loss of an eye, or fatality.
  • Submit inspection reports within 24 hours and a weekly summary of sites visited, findings, open and closed corrective actions, training delivered, recognition issued, near misses, and escalations.
Program Improvement
  • Maintain a running log of gaps between the written safety program and field reality - missing procedures, forms that don't fit the work, training that doesn't match the hazards, equipment shortfalls, and recurring workarounds.
  • Submit a written monthly report identifying each gap, the associated risk, and a recommended fix.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • 5+ years of commercial construction field experience with direct mechanical, plumbing, piping, or HVAC exposure - required. Trade background preferred over office-only safety experience.
  • Working knowledge of construction safety requirements for mechanical contracting: fall protection, ladders and lifts, electrical and LOTO, confined space, hot work, rigging and material handling, silica, HazCom, PPE, excavation, and heat illness.
  • OSHA 30-Hour Construction card - required at hire. Candidates without a current card are not eligible.
  • First Aid / CPR / AED certification, or obtainable within 30 days of start.
  • Valid Arizona driver's license and a record meeting company insurability standards - required.
  • Clear, factual field documentation skills; comfortable with tablet-based inspection tools and basic spreadsheets.
  • Able to hold a firm line on safety while maintaining working relationships with foremen, superintendents, GCs, and crews.
  • Preferred: Journeyman plumbing, pipefitting, HVAC, or welding background; prior foreman or superintendent experience.
  • Preferred: Bilingual English/Spanish.
  • Preferred: Competent-person training in fall protection, excavation, confined space, scaffolds, or rigging; CHST, STSC, or equivalent.
  • Preferred: Familiarity with general contractor safety prequalification requirements.
BENEFITS
  • Medical, Dental, Vision, and Life Insurance
  • Profit Sharing Retirement Plan
  • 6 Paid Holidays
  • Paid Time Off
  • Sick Time
  • Company events and more
