Job summary

Tempe Mechanical is seeking a Refrigeration Piping / Low Voltage Foreman for our growing HVAC division in the Greater Phoenix area. This hands-on leadership role oversees self-perform piping and the controls scope, ensuring systems start up, commissioning, and documentation are completed to spec.

Responsibilities include leading piping installs, coordinating with the controls subcontractor, performing equipment start-ups, and driving safe, compliant field execution.

Qualifications

  • Journeyman refrigeration and HVAC piping on commercial projects.
  • EPA Section 608 Universal certification required.
  • Demonstrated brazing proficiency.
  • Working knowledge of low voltage HVAC controls and wiring.
  • Ability to read and execute mechanical drawings and submittals.
  • Prior commissioning experience and familiarity with commissioning software preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead installation of refrigerant piping, brazing, pressure testing, evacuation, and charging to code and manufacturer requirements.
  • Manage crew productivity, layout, material staging, and daily manpower loading against schedule.
  • Enforce clean, code-compliant workmanship and address deficiencies before punchlist.
  • Install and terminate low voltage wiring, thermostats, relays, sensors, and controls.
  • Verify point-to-point functionality of low voltage devices before start-up.
  • Troubleshoot low voltage faults during start-up and testing.
  • Coordinate controls subcontractor field sequencing and readiness with the mechanical schedule.
  • Lead equipment start-ups and oversee manufacturer start-up technicians.
  • Own the field commissioning process and track checklists and tests.
  • Submit accurate daily field reports and turnover documentation.

Your Purpose in this Role

The Refrigeration Piping / Low Voltage Foreman is a supporting field leadership role within our new construction HVAC division. This is a working foreman position: the Foreman leads and works hands-on alongside the self-perform refrigeration piping crew and owns the field execution of low voltage systems, equipment start-up, and commissioning support. The Foreman is the field-level owner of making the mechanical system run and proving that it runs: refrigerant piping installed to specification, low voltage controls terminated and functional, factory and equipment start-ups completed and documented, and commissioning checklists tracked and closed out. This role also coordinates and quality-checks the controls subcontractor's field work to keep the mechanical system on schedule and functionally complete.

Pay

$35.00 to $40.00 hourly - Pay Rate Determined in Interview.

Your Duties and Responsibilities
Refrigeration Piping (Self-Perform)
  • Lead installation of refrigerant piping systems, including brazing, pressure testing, evacuation, and charging, to specification, code, and manufacturer requirements.
  • Manage crew productivity, layout, material staging, and daily manpower loading against the project schedule.
  • Enforce clean, code-compliant, inspection-ready workmanship and correct deficiencies before they reach punchlist.
Low Voltage & Controls Support
  • Install and terminate low voltage wiring, thermostats, relays, sensors, and functional control components for HVAC equipment.
  • Verify point-to-point functionality of low voltage devices prior to start-up and commissioning.
  • Troubleshoot low voltage faults during start-up and functional testing.
Controls Subcontractor Oversight
  • Coordinate the controls subcontractor's field sequencing, access, and readiness against the mechanical schedule.
  • Quality-check controls subcontractor work for completeness and functional readiness, and flag deficiencies to the Project Manager and Superintendent.
  • Coordinate, schedule, and inspect the controls subcontractor in the field; route all scope direction, contractual instruction, and change-generating decisions through the Project Manager.
Equipment & Factory Start‑Up
  • Perform and lead equipment start-ups and verify systems operate to design and manufacturer specifications.
  • Schedule, host, and oversee manufacturer and factory start-up technicians, and confirm all pre-start prerequisites are complete before the factory representative arrives.
  • Capture and resolve start-up deficiencies before turnover.
Commissioning
  • Own the field commissioning process for assigned scope, including building and tracking commissioning checklists, schedules, and functional test readiness.
  • Complete and maintain commissioning documentation in Facility Grid and other required software, keeping status current and defensible.
  • Serve as the field point of contact for the commissioning agent, general contractor, and owner's representative on functional performance items.
Documentation & Systems
  • Submit accurate and timely daily field reports.
  • Maintain start-up records, test reports, and commissioning logs, and provide closeout documentation to the Project Manager and Project Coordinator for the turnover package.
Field Leadership, Safety & Compliance
  • Set the pace, quality standard, and safety expectation for the crew.
  • Enforce Tempe Mechanical safety policies and procedures and participate in daily safety huddles and hazard analysis.
  • Maintain compliance with EPA, OSHA, and local regulations.
  • Support scheduling, look-ahead planning, and coordination with other trades and the general contractor.
Qualifications
  • Journeyman-level refrigeration and HVAC piping experience on commercial projects.
  • EPA Section 608 Universal certification (refrigerant handling) required.
  • Demonstrated brazing proficiency.
  • Working knowledge of low voltage HVAC controls, thermostats, relays, and sensor wiring.
  • Ability to read and execute mechanical drawings, control diagrams, and equipment submittals.
  • Prior commissioning experience and familiarity with Facility Grid or comparable commissioning software preferred.
  • Manufacturer start-up certifications (e.g., VRF, chiller, or rooftop unit platforms) preferred.
  • Experience coordinating controls or BAS subcontractors on new construction preferred.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and field organization skills.
  • Valid Arizona driver's license and clean driving record.
  • OSHA 30 preferred; bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus.
Reports To

HVAC General Foreman / Superintendent, with functional accountability to the Director of HVAC.
