Job summary

Southern Power Systems is seeking a Field Safety Coordinator to lead the safety program in the field across the Gulf Coast Region. The role includes training, implementing safety policies, and ensuring a safe work environment on customer projects.

You will analyze workplaces, provide safety leadership to crews, ensure OSHA and company compliance, and contribute to training modules and incident investigations. Occasional travel to sites is required to support safe, efficient operations.

Qualifications

  • 10 years of direct safety experience.
  • 5 years in chemical plants, refineries, or substations.
  • OSHA 510, OSHA 10 & 30, COSS preferred.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem solving.
  • Willingness to travel to field sites.

Responsibilities

Job Title: Field Safety Coordinator

Schedule: Monday - Friday (weekends as needed)

Location: Gulf Coast Region

Key Responsibilities/Duties
  • Leads the company safety program in the field while assisting in the growth and development of the organization’s safety culture through training, implementation of safety policies, and ensuring a safe work environment.
  • Analyze workplaces and design initiatives to control, eliminate, and prevent injuries.
  • Provide safety leadership and direction to crews to ensure safe, yet efficient and quality operations.
  • Ensure compliance of OSHA, federal, state, local and corporate policies and procedures.
  • Conduct safety meetings and train employees in safe construction methods and safe operation of equipment through safety procedures, best practices, and/or company policies.
  • Monitor and ensure adherence of safety rules and regulations on customer projects.
  • Advise management, operations, and project management of working conditions and recommend improvements in areas of employee health and safety.
  • Assist in updating training modules to include current regulations and best practices.
  • Investigate accidents to identify causes and determine preventive measures in the future.
  • Assist Safety Manager in collecting data, maintaining records and following up on safety related issues.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • 5-10 years of direct Safety-related experience.
  • 3 years minimum experience in chemical plants, refineries, and/or utility substations is required.
  • NFPA 70E Training and work-related experience preferred.
  • Ability to manage your time well and travel from site to site completing field observations; occasional overnight stay is required.
  • Ability to interface with the customer’s management team; understand, interpret, and implement the customer’s policies and safety requirements.
  • Possess OSHA 510, OSHA 10 & 30, COSS, and other professional safety related certifications are preferred.
  • Excellent skills in communication, collaboration, and problem solving/analysis are required.
  • Competent person able to train and qualify employees on various equipment and other tasks.
  • Knowledge of Human Performance based training is a plus.
  • Ability to effectively coach and mentor field technicians.
  • Familiarity of DOT policies and procedures is a plus.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Packages.
Minimum Requirements

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; bachelor’s degree in safety management, occupational safety, or a related field is a plus.
  • 10 years of direct safety related experience. (5 years minimum experience in chemical plants, refineries, and/or utility substations is required.)
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Ability to work skillfully with both hands constantly, independently, safely lift and carry objects up to 5 feet long and weighing up to 20 pounds routinely, 50 pounds occasionally, climb and maintain balance on ladders and scaffold, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, push, pull, twist, finger, grasp and feel on a constant and repetitive basis, stand, walk, talk, see (20/20 vision naturally or corrected), hear within normal range and perform repetitive motion activities.
  • Ability to work in extreme environmental conditions including excessive heat and cold, noise, vibrations, dust, fumes, oils, wear a portable respirator.
  • Ability to physically negotiate the hazards of a new construction worksite (i.e. uneven surfaces, floor openings, heights, construction debris and poor lighting).
