Job summary

Hive + Co. is seeking a Field Operations Instructor to deliver and evaluate high-quality classroom and field training for apprentice to journey level transmission line workers.

You will ensure participants gain technical knowledge, hands-on skills, safety awareness, and professional standards essential to construct, maintain, and repair high‑voltage lines. The role requires 4–7 years of journey-level experience, OSHA/NESC knowledge, and strong mentoring abilities.

Qualifications

• Must have 4–7 years of journey-level technical/field experience as a distribution line worker, with a minimum of 4 years transmission line experience.
• High school diploma or equivalent required; additional technical training or certifications preferred.
• Comprehensive knowledge of electrical transmission and distribution systems, construction standards, and safe work practices.

Responsibilities

• Deliver training programs that support field operations, including construction, maintenance, troubleshooting, work methods, and safety procedures.
• Deliver instruction on industry safety practices, regulatory requirements (OSHA, NESC, etc.), and company policies.
• Practical knowledge of transmission system principles, protective devices, and related equipment.
• Ability to perform basic transmission and distribution line work, including high‑pressure insulator washing.
• Understand stringing, splicing, sagging, insulating, and securing conductors.
• Operate company vehicles and install protective equipment such as blankets and line covers.
• Replace steel members, crossarms, framing components, and similar hardware.
• Perform cutovers between old and new equipment installations.
• Paint structures and conduct minor tree/limb clearing.
• Demonstrate and supervise proper use of tools, equipment, climbing techniques, and rigging procedures.
• Evaluate trainee progress through practical assessments, written tests, and field observations.
• Maintain training records, develop lesson plans, and update curriculum as industry standards and technologies evolve.
• Promote a safety‑first culture and serve as a role model for professionalism, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
• Coordinate with management and other instructors to schedule training sessions and support organizational goals.
• Conduct classroom and hands‑on instruction related to electrical theory, system operations, equipment use, hazard recognition, and safe work practices.
• Provide mentoring, coaching, and individualized feedback to support employee growth and success.
• Stay informed on new tools, equipment, technologies, and work methods used across the client’s service territory.
• Participate in storm restoration efforts as needed.

Field Operations Instructor

Client has three contract openings for a Field Operations Instructorwho will responsible for delivering and evaluating high-quality classroom and field training for apprentice, journey level, and experienced transmission line workers, as well as other utility personnel as needed. This role ensures participants build technical knowledge, hands‑on skills, safety awareness, and professional standards required to construct, maintain, and repair high‑voltage transmission lines in alignment with industry standards and best practices.

Looking for 3 positions in the following areas

• Cleveland/Akron, OH
• Phillipsburg, PA
• Phillipsburg, NJ

Occasional travel to remote sites up to 50% – the other 50% will be onsite

• Participate in storm restoration efforts as needed.
• Collaborate with other instructors and operational leaders to ensure consistency and quality across training programs.
• Facilitate field‑based training, including climbing, tool use, equipment operation, and distribution system construction activities.
• Skilled in installing/removing poles, towers, structures, conductors, insulators, and all other associated line construction material.

Qualifications

• Must have 4 – 7 years of journey-level technical/field experience as a distribution line worker, with a minimum of 4 years transmission line experience.
• High school diploma or equivalent required; additional technical training or certifications preferred.
• Comprehensive knowledge of electrical transmission and distribution systems, construction standards, and safe work practices.
• Demonstrated ability to climb poles, operate bucket trucks, and work at heights in various weather conditions.
• Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills; ability to engage and motivate adult learners.
• Familiarity with applicable regulatory standards (OSHA, NESC, NFPA 70E) and utility industry best practices.
• Basic proficiency with computers and training software (e.g., PowerPoint and Microsoft Office products) is desirable.
• Physical ability to demonstrate field skills such as climbing, rigging, and equipment operation.
• Previous experience as a trainer, instructor, or mentor in a line worker or utility environment.
• Strong working knowledge of work methods, equipment, safety standards, and distribution system design.
• Thorough knowledge of OSHA requirements, NESC standards, and utility safety practices.
• Instructional training, adult‑education certification, or similar qualifications are a plus.
• Experience training, coaching, mentoring, or leading field crews are preferred.
• Valid Class A CDL or the ability to obtain one is required.
• Must possess, or can obtain, a crane operator license specific to swing‑cab equipment.
• Completion of a rigging awareness course is required or ability to obtain.
• Completion of a signal person awareness course is required or ability to obtain.
• In‑depth knowledge of transmission hot‑stick work practices is required.
• Must possess distribution knowledge or demonstrate the ability to develop this knowledge through a systematic approach within WFD, including gloving, underground residential distribution (URD), and troubleshooting.
• Work is performed under general supervision.

• Combination of classrooms, training yard, and field environments.
• Frequent standing, walking, climbing, and exposure to outdoor conditions.
• May require occasional travel to remote sites or company locations; travel up to 50% of the time.
