Job description

Who We Are

At Direct Communications, we do not just provide internet; we connect rural communities to the world. We are looking for a reliable, hard-working Mainer to join our team. This is not a desk job. If you love working with your hands, take pride in keeping your neighbors connected, and do not mind getting your boots dirty in Maine’s rugged weather, we want to talk to you.

The Opportunity

The Field Installation and Repair Technician is responsible for installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting both high-speed fiber optic networks and traditional copper-based telecommunication systems. This role supports residential and commercial customers by ensuring the seamless delivery of high-speed internet, and traditional landline voice services. The ideal candidate possesses strong technical troubleshooting skills, safely operates a variety of hand and power tools, and delivers exceptional customer service directly in the field.

Core Responsibilities
  • Perform end-to-end installations of fiber-to-the-home/business (FTTH/FTTB) and copper-based DSL and POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service).
  • Troubleshoot and repair service disruptions, signal degradation, and hardware failures in both fiber and copper infrastructures.
  • Operate specialized test equipment, including Optical Time-Domain Reflectometers (OTDR), optical power meters, copper loop testers, and volt-ohm meters.
  • Splice, terminate, and test fiber optic lines (using fusion and mechanical splicing) and copper pairs (color-coded twisting and cross-connects).
  • Run aerial and underground drops from main distribution lines to customer premises, navigating crawl spaces, attics, and ladders.
  • Install and configure Network Interface Devices (NID), Optical Network Terminals (ONT), routers, and Wi-Fi extenders.
  • Educate customers on equipment operation, self-service tools, and internet speed expectations before leaving the worksite.
  • Document job completion, signal readings, inventory usage, and infrastructure modifications using a company-issued mobile dispatch application.
  • Maintain safety standards by strictly adhering to OSHA guidelines, wearing personal protective equipment (PPE), and placing traffic safety setups.
Physical Requirements

To support our field team and maintain our network, you must be comfortable with the physical demands of the job:

  • Working outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Walking over uneven surfaces.
  • Climbing ladders.
  • Lifting and carrying 35-50 lbs frequently, 50+ lbs occasionally.
  • Kneeling, stooping, bending, crawling, twisting.
  • Reaching forward, grasping, push/pull, wrist twisting.
Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have and maintain valid Driver’s License with good driving record.
  • Ability to pass drug screening at any time during employment.
  • Action-oriented mindset: accepts challenges with enthusiasm without fear and seizes opportunities.
