Maine Department of Transportation in Augusta, ME is seeking a skilled Heavy Equipment Mechanic to perform maintenance, repair, and rebuilding of a wide range of heavy vehicles and construction gear in the field. The role requires diagnosing mechanical and electrical problems, testing and wiring, using specialized tools, and applying independent judgement with limited supervision.

A Class B CDL with air endorsements and Maine licenses are required, along with passing a medical and respirator fit

Qualifications

  • Experience in automotive, heavy vehicle, and/or construction equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Licensing/Registration/Certification: Class B CDL with air endorsements; Class A & D inspection licenses; Class E inspection license for some roles.
  • Valid Class C State of Maine license by first day of employment.
  • Medical exam, drug test, respirator fit test, and driver road test requirements.
  • U.S. Citizens, Permanent Residents, or eligible visa holders only.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain, repair, and rebuild heavy vehicles and construction equipment in the field or in a regional field garage.
  • Diagnose mechanical and electrical problems and evaluate equipment condition.
  • Test, install, repair, rebuild, rewire, replace, and/or fabricate parts using specialized tools.
  • Operate with limited supervision; exercise independent judgement in maintenance tasks.

Work includes diagnosing mechanical and electrical problems, evaluating overall conditions, and performing skilled technical tasks in testing, installing, repairing, rebuilding, rewiring, replacing, and/or fabricating parts for a variety of heavy vehicle, automotive, and construction equipment. This position operates with a higher degree of independence in a field environment, requiring independent judgement pertaining to the maintenance, repair, and/or rebuilding of heavy vehicles, automotive, and construction equipment, on the road or in a field garage. Work is performed under limited supervision.To be minimally qualified for this position candidates must provide evidence of the following experience:Education, training, and/or experience in automotive, heavy vehicle, and/or construction equipment maintenance, repair, and diagnosis or another closely related mechanical field demonstrating competency in rebuilding vehicles and heavy equipment; identifying and correcting equipment problems; using specialized tools and repair methods; and managing acquisition, storage, and distribution of parts and supplies.Licensing/Registration/Certification Requirements:Class B CDL with air endorsements and Class A & D inspection licenses. Some positions may also include Class E inspection license requirement.
