Job summary

Texas Materials, a CRH company, is seeking a Diesel Mechanic to inspect, diagnose, maintain, and repair heavy‑duty diesel equipment used in aggregates, mining, and construction. The role enhances equipment reliability and safety.

You will perform preventive maintenance, troubleshoot engines, hydraulics, and electrical systems, and support field service with a strong commitment to quality and teamwork. Candidates should have a high school diploma or GED, 3+ years of diesel equipment experience,

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years' experience troubleshooting and repairing diesel-powered heavy equipment.
  • ASE or manufacturer certifications are a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and engine-related issues on heavy equipment and support vehicles.
  • Perform preventive maintenance services including inspections, lubrication, fluid changes, and equipment adjustments.
  • Repair and maintain diesel engines, transmissions, differentials, braking systems, steering systems, and suspension components.
  • Troubleshoot and repair hydraulic and electrical systems on loaders, haul trucks, excavators, crushers, conveyors, and other aggregate production equipment.
  • Conduct equipment inspections to identify safety concerns and required repairs.
  • Complete work orders, maintenance records, and inspection reports accurately and timely.
  • Operate diagnostic tools, testing equipment, hand tools, and power tools safely and effectively.
  • Perform welding, cutting, fabrication, and component replacement as needed.
  • Assist with field service repairs and emergency breakdown response.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area and ensure tools and equipment are properly maintained.
  • Follow all companies, OSHA, and MSHA safety regulations and procedures.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, operators, and other maintenance personnel regarding equipment status and repair needs.
  • Support continuous improvement efforts to maximize equipment performance and reliability.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Position Overview

The Diesel Mechanic is responsible for the inspection, diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of heavy-duty diesel-powered equipment used in aggregates, mining, and construction operations. This position ensures equipment reliability, minimizes downtime, and supports safe and efficient production by performing preventative maintenance and repair work on a wide variety of mobile and stationary equipment. The Diesel Mechanic must demonstrate a strong commitment to safety, quality workmanship, and teamwork while working in shop and field environments.

Key Responsibilities
  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and engine-related issues on heavy equipment and support vehicles.
  • Perform preventive maintenance services including inspections, lubrication, fluid changes, and equipment adjustments.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Education/Experience
  • High school diploma or General Education Degree GED is preferred.
  • Previous related experience in the construction field.
  • Minimum of 3 years experience troubleshooting and repairing diesel-powered heavy equipment preferred.
  • ASE certifications and/or manufacturer certifications are a plus.
Knowledge/Skill Requirements
  • Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and heavy equipment components.
  • Ability to read and interpret service manuals, schematics, and technical documents.
  • Proficiency with diagnostic software and electronic troubleshooting equipment.
  • Working knowledge of welding and fabrication techniques preferred.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Work Requirements
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Must pass pre-employment physical, drug screen, and criminal background check.
  • Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
  • Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required.
  • Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required.
  • Must be willing to work nights, weekends, overtime, and on-call schedules when necessary.
  • Valid driver's license required; CDL preferred or ability to obtain one.
  • Individuals are required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in designated operations and production areas as stated by OSHA and/or MSHA. Protective equipment may include, but is not limited to, hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, steel-toed boots, face shield, and coveralls.
  • Compliance with all OSHA and/or MSHA regulations.
Physical Requirements
  • Able to stand, walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, and work in confined spaces.
  • Must be able to use hands and fingers to operate tools and equipment.
  • Vision abilities (with correction) include close, distance, peripheral, depth, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Must be able to work in all weather conditions and temperature extremes.
  • Frequently required to sit, stand, climb ladders, and enter/exit heavy equipment.
  • Frequently required to lift, carry, push, and pull tools, parts, and equipment components.
  • Must be able to exert up to 20 lbs. constantly, 25–50 lbs. frequently, and up to 100 lbs. occasionally with assistance when necessary.
  • Ability to work around dust, noise, vibration, moving machinery, and other construction/aggregate plant conditions.
