Job summary

The City of Albuquerque seeks a Solid Waste Laborer to perform manual labor tasks in support of assigned areas, including waste collection and grounds maintenance. You will assist in construction and maintenance of City facilities and open spaces, operate basic equipment, and follow safety procedures in the field.

Work may involve travel between sites and exposure to traffic, noise, dust and weather; minimum education is a high school diploma or GED; valid NM driver's license and COP within 6

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• One (1) year of general maintenance or construction experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Perform a wide variety of manual labor tasks in support of assigned function including construction and maintenance of City facilities, structures or open space areas, general janitorial and grounds maintenance duties.
• Assist in the construction and maintenance of park facilities including shade structures, fencing, and play area equipment; install forms, shovel and spread concrete; cut and tie re-bar; assist with block laying of walls.
• Perform general building janitorial and custodial duties; sweep, mop and buff floors; vacuum and shampoo carpets; clean rest-rooms, meeting rooms, ballrooms, and exhibit halls.
• Assist warehouse staff in receiving, unpacking, storing and distributing supplies; verify description, quantity and condition against invoices or requisitions; assist with inventory control.
• Support street maintenance operations as assigned; check streets for holes, prepare holes for asphalt, shovel hot mix, tamp to level the fill; assist with construction of manholes, sewer inlets and improvements.
• Support the maintenance of City open space areas; collect trash and assist in installation of gates, fence posts, signs and flags.
• Assist planting and care of trees and shrubs; dig, ball, burlap trees; hand water; pull weeds; spray to prevent infestations.
• Spread organic fertilizers and apply herbicides; operate herbicide equipment.
• Assist with irrigation system installation and maintenance; dig trenches.
• Assist in construction of trails and erosion control devices.
• Operate, load, and direct solid waste trucks and equipment; assist in collections; sweep and pick up trash; maintain right of ways.
• Sweep and clean outside of buildings; maintain open space.
• Solid Waste laborer duties in various areas including refuse collection, disposal, weed and graffiti control, and city right of way maintenance.
• Adhere to safe work practices and procedures.
