Job summary

The State of Indiana seeks Field Examiners for the Indiana State Board of Accounts to audit government units and report on their financial condition. On-site roles prefer residency in the assigned district and require a valid driver’s license.

Entry levels include progression from Field Examiner 3 to 2 to 1 based on competency and experience. Starting salary is $53,222 annually with adjustments possible based on education and experience; a robust benefits package accompanies full-time employment

Qualifications

• Must have 5+ years of accounting experience applying the outlined knowledge, skills, and abilities in a similar role.
• Thorough knowledge of governmental and generally accepted accounting and auditing standards.
• Ability to interpret, analyze and record data and fiscal information to reach logical conclusions.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality.
• Ability to modify audit plans based on control structure reviews.
• Ability to evaluate financial and managerial control structures for manual and computer systems.
• Excellent communication, both oral and written.

Responsibilities

• Design and perform audit procedures to examine assigned government units.
• Serve as lead auditor on audit teams with oversight responsibilities.
• Prepare reports detailing audit findings on financial position and compliance.
• Perform audits of federal funds received by governmental units.
• Research statutes and standards for audits and consult with participating organizations.
• Ensure proper accounting and management policies are followed by public officials.
• May serve as lead auditor on special projects such as election recounts as needed.
• Advise and instruct elected/public officials on statutory requirements and auditing practices.
• Communicate with stakeholders in response to auditing concerns.
• Provide on-the-job instruction and supervisory support to agency staff.
