Job summary

TUV SUD America is seeking Field Evaluation Engineers/Electrical Inspectors to perform field evaluations of industrial machinery and electrical equipment in hazardous locations across North America, with extensive travel and remote work flexibility.

Ideal candidates have 3+ years of HazLoc experience, schematics literacy, and strong knowledge of NFPA/UL standards. The role includes preparing reports, coordinating with clients and AHJs, and ensuring regulatory compliance.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of hazardous location field evaluations and/or product certification.
  • Hands-on experience evaluating industrial machinery in HazLoc settings.
  • Knowledge of haz loc protection methods: Ex d, Ex i, Ex p, Ex e.
  • Working knowledge of NFPA 79, UL 508A, IEC/UL 60204-1.
  • Familiarity with NRTL field evaluation processes and requirements.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, panel layouts, and technical documentation.

TUV SUD America Inc., a global leader in testing, inspection, and certification is currently seeking experienced persons to work as Field Evaluation Engineers/Electrical Inspectors on client projects related to electrical equipment and machinery. The Engineer/Inspector will use experience and expertise to perform testing and inspection at vendor locations within North America. US-based candidates are sought for these opportunities.

Field Evaluation Engineers/Electrical Inspectors will ensure compliance with accreditation requirements, company and client-specific policies, procedures, and others as required. In addition, the Engineer/Inspector will submit required deliverables that fully comply with all testing requirements by the assignment deadline. Field Evaluation Engineers/Electrical Inspectors will focus on the test and inspection of our client's field-installed equipment. These roles are responsible for completing all aspects of regulatory compliance testing and reporting on client products using ANSI/NFPA/UL standards. This is a remote-work from home position with 75% - 90% travel in the northeastern United States.

Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform field evaluations of industrial machinery and electrical equipment installed in hazardous (classified) locations (Class I, II, III; Divisions and Zones)
  • Assess compliance with applicable codes and standards including:
    • NFPA 70 (NEC Articles 500-516)
    • NFPA 79 (Industrial Machinery)
    • UL 508A (Industrial Control Panels)
    • UL 698A (Industrial Control Panels Relating to Hazardous (Classified) Locations)
    • UL 1203 (Explosion-Proof Equipment)
    • UL 60079 Series / IEC 60079 Series (HazLoc equipment)
    • CSA C22.2 standards (as applicable)
  • Evaluate machinery for electrical safety, grounding/bonding, protection methods, and proper component selection for HazLoc environments
  • Perform inspections, testing, and documentation required for field labeling and certification
  • Interface with clients, AHJs, and internal teams to support compliance and project execution
  • Prepare detailed field evaluation reports and technical documentation
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Minimum 3 years of direct experience in hazardous location field evaluations and/or product certification
  • Hands-on experience evaluating industrial machinery in hazardous locations
  • Strong knowledge of hazardous location protection methods:
    • Explosion-proof (Ex d)
    • Intrinsic Safety (Ex i)
    • Purged/Pressurized (Ex p)
    • Increased Safety (Ex e)
  • Working knowledge of machinery and industrial control standards including:
    • NFPA 79
    • UL 508A
    • IEC/UL 60204-1
  • Familiarity with NRTL field evaluation processes and requirements
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, panel layouts, and technical documentation
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working with an NRTL or field evaluation body
  • Exposure to IECEx and/or ATEX certification schemes
  • Strong understanding of SCCR, grounding/bonding, and installation requirements for machinery in HazLoc environments
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work independently in the field
Additional information

The anticipated annual base pay range for this full-time position is $95,000 - 110,000. Actual base pay will be determined based on various factors, including years of relevant experience, training, qualifications, and internal equity. The compensation package may also include an annual bonus target, subject to eligibility and other requirements.

Salary offer can be discussed depending on candidates experience. Additionally, we offer a comprehensive benefits package to employees, including a 401(k) plan with employer match, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave for birthing parents and 2 weeks for other parents, health plans (medical, dental, and vision), life insurance and disability, and generous paid time off.
