Job summary

APTIM is seeking a junior Environmental Scientist to support our stormwater compliance program in the Norfolk, VA area on a full-time basis. The role involves field sampling, data management, and collaborative support across environmental compliance tasks with travel to client facilities.

The position requires a Bachelor’s degree in a core science or related field, a willingness to learn, and flexibility for site visits and weather-dependent fieldwork.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in a core science, engineering, environmental science, or related field.
• 1–2 years of related work experience preferred, entry level considered with degree.
• Travel and flexible hours to support stormwater sampling as needed.
• Ability to work independently in the field under various weather conditions.
• Detail oriented with strong written and oral communication skills.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office and able to learn other software.

Responsibilities

• Collect environmental samples in the field and prepare them for lab delivery.
• Calibrate and use technical instruments.
• Review permits and planning documents (NPDES MSGP, SWPPP, SPCC, etc.).
• Plan and schedule field activities across multiple sites and communicate with clients for site access.
• Travel to client sites in personal vehicle and work weekends/overtime as needed.
• Maintain records and prepare inspection reports documenting site conditions and compliance.
• Provide recommendations for improvements and ensure timely project execution.
