Job summary

Alpena County Road Commission is seeking an Engineering Technician to join the roads and bridges team in Alpena, Michigan. This role blends field inspections with office duties, including reviewing plans, measurements, and project records.

You will work with contractors and Road Commission staff to support construction, inspection, and maintenance of roads and bridges. Starting pay is $26.00–$37.00 per hour based on experience.

Qualifications

• High school diploma plus related college or technical training is preferred.
• 2+ years of related engineering, drafting, construction, surveying, or technical experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Inspect road and bridge construction to ensure work follows plans and specifications.
• Perform field surveying, construction staking, measurements, and post-construction surveying.
• Take measurements and track project quantities.
• Collect, sample, and test soils, aggregates, and other materials in field and lab.
• Document project activity with daily reports, photos, and records.
• Assist with plans, estimates, proposals, and other project documents.
• Operate surveying equipment and use CADD and engineering software to maintain drawings and records.
• Set up and monitor traffic-counting equipment and data.
• Check work zones and traffic-control devices for proper placement and safety.
