Job summary

The Alpena County Road Commission seeks an Engineering Technician to join their roads and bridges team in Alpena, Michigan. This position blends field inspection with office work, performing surveying, measurements, materials testing, and documenting construction while coordinating with contractors and Road Commission staff.

You’ll spend time outdoors and indoors, using total stations, levels, lasers, and CAD software to maintain drawings, records, maps, and project information.

Qualifications

• High school diploma plus related college or technical training in civil engineering or related field.
• 2+ years in engineering, drafting, surveying, construction, or related technical experience.
• Comfort with computers, spreadsheets, and engineering software.
• Ability to read and understand construction plans, specs, measurements, and technical information.
• Strong attention to detail and accurate field documentation.
• Strong communication and teamwork skills.
• Willingness to obtain MDOT inspection certifications (paid by Road Commission).
• Flexibility to extend hours during construction.

Responsibilities

• Inspect road and bridge construction to ensure plans, specifications, and quality standards are followed.
• Perform field surveying, construction staking, measurements, and post-construction surveying.
• Take measurements and track quantities for projects.
• Collect, sample, and test soils, aggregates, and other construction materials in field and lab.
• Document project activity through daily inspection reports, measurements, quantities, photographs, records, and as-built information.
• Assist with engineering plans, specifications, estimates, proposals, and other project documents.
• Use surveying equipment such as total stations, levels, lasers, measuring equipment, and other field tools.
• Work with CADD and engineering/project software to maintain drawings, records, maps, and project information.
• Set up, monitor, retrieve, and maintain traffic-counting equipment and prepare traffic data.
• Check construction work zones and traffic-control devices for proper placement and compliance.
• Communicate with contractors, Road Commission employees, and others involved with projects to keep work moving and address issues in the field.
