Job summary

Austin Commercial is seeking a Field Engineer for the Phoenix, AZ Division. The role supports senior field engineers in supervising field engineering activities, surveying, and coordination with subcontractors to ensure accurate layouts and safe, efficient construction processes.

The position requires a BS in construction management/science or engineering (or 4 years of equivalent experience), OSHA 30-hour certification, and strong math skills.

Qualifications

  • B.S. in construction management/science, engineering, or related field or, in lieu of degree, 4 years of commercial construction field engineering experience.
  • Successful completion of OSHA 30-Hour Construction Industry Outreach Training (may obtain within first year)
  • High level of math proficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews contract documents before the project begins and identifies discrepancies between site layout and plans; initiates RFIs for clarification.
  • Directs a crew to establish dimensional control lines and elevations using owner benchmarks.
  • Coordinates with the independent surveyor, authorities, and others to locate benchmarks, property lines, and corners; communicates results and resolves discrepancies.
  • Maintains daily contact with field superintendents to coordinate field engineering support and monitor alignment of forms and elevations for pours.
  • Monitors dimensional control of subcontracted work and ensures accuracy of dimensions on plans and drawings.
  • Provides on-the-job training in basic field engineering subjects for subordinates.
  • Ensures care and security of engineering instruments and equipment; may calibrate instruments as needed.
  • Discusses field problems with the superintendent, offering solutions and assisting in day-to-day supervision of crafts.
  • Assists in evaluating construction activity impact on adjacent properties and recommends mitigation actions.
  • Calculates and verifies concrete quantities for defined pouring areas; participates in safety programs.
  • Supports safety practices as outlined in the Safety & Health Manual.

The purpose of this job is to assist the sr. field engineer in providing overall supervision for all field-engineering activities associated with the construction of a project, including a full range of surveying services that are carried out throughout all phases of the work.

Responsibilities
  • Reviews contract documents before the project begins and identifies discrepancies between the site layout plans, architectural plans, and structural plans; initiates a request for information (RFI) to the architect, directly or indirectly, seeking clarification of these dimensions
  • Utilizing the benchmark provided by the owner, directs a crew in establishing the dimensional control lines and elevations for the project
  • Works with the independent surveyor, municipal authorities, and other responsible parties to identify all benchmarks, property lines, and property corners that relate to the project site; points out the control lines and elevations established for the project; resolves any problems that arise between the initial layout and the findings of the independent surveyor
  • Maintains daily contact with field superintendents to stay abreast of changes in the sequence of work; organizes field crews daily to provide the field engineering support needed to support construction activities that day, including monitoring alignment of forms before concrete pours, concrete finishing to the prescribed elevation, placement of anchor bolts, structural steel, embeds openings, penetrations, etc.
  • Periodically monitors dimensional control of subcontracted work
  • Checks and verifies the accuracy of all dimensions on the plans and shop drawings; initiates RFls in a timely manner to resolve discrepancies before they can cause construction delays
  • Provides on-the-job training in basic field engineering subjects for subordinates
  • Assumes overall responsibility for the proper care, maintenance and security of all engineering instruments, tools and equipment; may perform intricate adjustments to instruments at prescribed intervals to ensure consistency in measurements
  • Discusses field construction problems with the superintendent on an ongoing basis, offering ideas that could lead to a solution to the problem; may assist the superintendent in day-to-day supervision of the crafts when so assigned and report uantities of work in place
  • Assists the superintendent in evaluating the impact of construction activity on adjacent properties, recommending courses of action to minimize risks, damage, or inconvenience to others
  • Calculates and verifies concrete quantities for defined pouring areas (slabs, columns, walls, etc.) before the superintendent orders concrete
  • Participates in jobsite safety as outlined in company's Safety & Health Manual
Requirements
