Job summary

Martinus Rail is seeking a Field Engineer to coordinate and control engineering works across disciplines, with a focus on planning, surveying, procurement, and quality control in accordance with Martinus Rail standards.

The role requires a Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field, 1-2 years in engineering/construction, and proficiency with MS Projects, Assignar and Primavera, plus intermediate Excel/Word and basic Outlook. On-site work in Alaska is required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Project Management, Construction Management or similar.
  • 1-2 years of experience in an engineering/construction role.
  • Relevant rail construction experience and working knowledge of MS Projects, Assignar, and Primavera.
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word, basic knowledge of Microsoft Outlook.
  • Assist in contract administration, identify and approve changes, manage purchasing and subcontract conditions, and maintain accurate project records.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the contract administration, ensuring that Martinus’ rights and obligations are exercised, and proper records are kept.
  • Identify where change is instructed, or occurs without an instruction, that would constitute a variation or change of scope under the head contract.
  • Achieve agreement to variation prior to works occurring.
  • Understand sub-contract agreement conditions.
  • Ensure all purchase orders, receipts, invoices, and bills are coded and submitted to accounts payables.
  • Develop project execution plans / staging plans and ensure they are followed.
  • Generate Submittal log and produce required submittals.
  • Generate Purchase Order logs and manage PO process to meet schedule requirements and maximize savings.
  • Record progress against, and update the 2‑weeks look ahead program and update master project schedule.
  • Lead project weekly status meetings with OMs and/or field supervisors – focusing on progress to date, variance from budgets, and where applicable, recovery plans.
  • Track the percentage of planned and unplanned activity undertaken and check that the planned works.
  • Resolve engineering issues as they arise (construction methods, design, engineering procedures, etc.).
  • Prepare and update project cost reports and maintain forecast cost at completion.
  • Review schedule to identify opportunities to accelerate work or reduce costs.
  • Review design documents to achieve clarification and compliance with standards, specifications, and codes as well as adequacy of design documents for the purpose of construction.
  • Review daily work reports (DWRs) to ensure they are accurate and contain required information.
  • Ensure daily timesheets are being produced and are accurate.
  • Perform Quality Control inspections as required.

Job description

Our Field Engineers are responsible for ensuring the effective coordination and control of engineering works through activities of technical, engineering, inspection, scheduling, planning, survey, procurement, and quality control based on Martinus Rail standards. They ensure effective communication and coordination between all disciplines and all other project activities relevant to our work.

The Role:

Health, Safety, Quality & Environment:
  • Support the investigation of any near miss, incident, NCR, event that are class 2A or above.
  • Ensure all employees and visitors to the workplace are inducted adequately and are aware of relevant SQ&E responsibilities/risks.
  • Ensure that the requirements of the Project Safety Management Plan (PSMP) are complied with and that specific requirements are carried out.
  • Be aware of project environment and sustainability KPIs and what measures are taken to achieve them.
Qualifications:
  • Must be able and have a willingness to work safely.
  • Must be willing to work in all types of weather conditions.
  • Must be willing to work a flexible schedule, on-call, nights, weekends & holidays.
