Job summary

Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) is seeking a CPI Investigator I/II to protect children and strengthen families. This mobile field-based role requires interviewing families, coordinating with schools and law enforcement, and making informed decisions under pressure.

The position demands flexibility, sound judgment, and the ability to manage extensive documentation across diverse environments. Regular travel up to 60% and on-call duties are expected.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of child development.
• Knowledge of family dynamics.
• Skill in effective verbal and written communication.
• Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
• Skill in problem solving techniques.
• Ability to operate a personal computer.
• Flexibility to travel and attend visits after 5pm.
• Ability to be on call on a rotating basis and work irregular hours.

Responsibilities

• Responds quickly in crisis situations involving children who may be in an abusive or neglectful situation.
• Conducts forensic investigations of reports of abuse/neglect to determine if abuse or neglect occurred and assess risk.
• Interviews people in the case (parents, caregivers, reporters, family, etc.).
• Assesses child safety and takes necessary actions to protect the child.
• Maintains documentation and completes required forms timely.
• Gathers family and kinship information to support placement if needed.
• Participates in regular on-call rotation and travel as required.
• Develops and maintains effective working relationships with law enforcement, judicial, medical professionals, and the community.
