Job summary

AB Graphic International is seeking a Field Control Systems Technician based in Elgin, IL. The role covers troubleshooting software, control systems, electrical and mechanical issues on-site or remotely, with extensive travel across the USA, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean.

You will diagnose faults, program machine components, and deliver training on the full ABG equipment range during installations and service visits, including potential trips to Europe.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED; technical degree or certification preferred.
  • Strong PLC/HMI/software knowledge and experience.
  • Experience with C/C++/C# and ladder logic; XML data familiarity.
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot ABG equipment across software, control systems, electrical and mechanical issues on-site or remotely.
  • Diagnose machine faults using various software environments and assist customers.
  • Conduct service visits across USA, Canada, Mexico, Caribbean with 85% travel.
  • Perform warranty visits and on-site rectifications.
  • Provide training on ABG equipment across locations.

Job Title

Field Control Systems Technician

Main Purpose of role

  • Troubleshoot all aspects of the A B Graphic equipment, addressing software and control systems, electrical (both high and low voltage AC/DC), and mechanical-related issues both on-site and remotely via phone.
  • Use various software programming environments to understand machine functionality to diagnose equipment faults and assist technicians or customers find machine faults both onsite and via remote connection.
  • Diagnose and program various machine components for customer support tasks and parts replacement.
  • Conduct service visits to customer sites across the USA, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean, diagnosing faults and executing on-site rectifications.
  • Undertake warranty visits to customer facilities in the USA, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean, resolving issues directly on-site.
  • Embrace extensive travel, accounting for approximately 85% of working time. Although rare, longer on-site stays or trips to Europe may be necessary based on operational requirements.
  • Deliver personalized training on the complete ABG equipment range, which can take place in Elgin, IL, the UK, Germany, or across North America during installations and service visits.
  • While not engaged in customer site visits, be a valuable presence in our Elgin office, efficiently handling calls, resolving customer queries, and contributing to the development or refurbishment of in-house equipment.
  • Run machines for Customer demonstrations and factory acceptances

Main Tasks

  • Produce timely and detailed service reports
  • Completion of install and modification reports direct to manufacturer
  • Completion of expenses application
  • Cooperate with technical team and share information across the organization
  • Comprehend customer requirements and make appropriate recommendations/briefings
  • Build positive relationships with customer
  • Available to travel any time unless vacation time is requested
  • Work on ABG equipment range: Vectra, Omega, Digicon, Enprom, additional lines may be required
  • Offer support if applicable to other members of staff.

Key Skills

  • Ability to apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills to troubleshoot, test, repair and service technical equipment
  • Relevant PLC / HMI / software knowledge and experience
  • Experienced with the following programming languages: C, C++, C# / Ladder logic / Structured Text / Flow Diagram / Function Block Diagram / CodeSys based environments / XML data files.
  • Electrical design experience useful
  • I.T skills – Understand networking and Visual Studio coding
  • Ability to travel up to 85% of the year, domestically and internationally, work flexible shifts and to adapt to changing work schedules
  • Passport and Clean driving record
  • Ability to lift up to 55 pounds
  • Ability to stand on your feet up to 8 hours a day
  • Great communication skills to work with customers
