Job summary

City of San Antonio seeks a Code Enforcement Officer to conduct on-site inspections of properties to enforce city codes and ordinances. You will inspect junked vehicles, vacant lots, and consult with owners to ensure compliance, while presenting findings to neighborhood groups and at city events.

The role involves field notes, reports, and documentation for abatement actions, with training and licensure required within 18 months. Primarily outdoor work with variable conditions.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED equivalent recognized by TEA or regional accrediting agency.
• Valid Class C Texas Driver's License.
• Must become certified and State licensed as a Code Enforcement Officer within 18 months of hire.
• Applicants may substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education (and vice versa) to meet minimum requirements.
• Pre-employment drug testing and background checks are required; additional checks may apply.
• Official transcripts, diplomas, certifications and licenses must be submitted at processing.

Responsibilities

• Perform onsite premise and structure inspections to identify violations of City codes.
• Inspect junked vehicles for violations of the Junked Vehicle Ordinance.
• Inspect vacant lots for violations of the Vacant Lot Ordinance.
• Consult with property owners to show violations and enforce compliance.
• Consult with citizens about inspection results.
• Attend neighborhood associations to present department code enforcement activities.
• Attend City events and educational seminars as required.
• Maintain field notes and daily activity reports for investigations.
• Submit documentation for contractors to bid and abate violations.
• Research property information and initiate abatement procedures.
• Follow legal procedures to achieve abatement, including citations and notices.
• Enter inspection data in handheld, laptop, or PC.
• Submit documentation for local newspaper publication.
• Perform related duties as required.
