Job description

At Covanta Environmental Solutions (CES), the Field Chemist is responsible for directing a specific phase of chemical and/or physical testing activities and performing related work as required. The role involves working at customer locations (inside and outside) for segregating, packing, loading hazardous and non-hazardous waste for transportation, and ensuring safety processes at all times. The Field Chemist is also responsible for compliance with all RCRA, state, and federal guidelines.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities
  • Certify that health and safety is the number one priority by complying with all safe work practices, guidelines, procedures, and acting safely at all times.
  • Assist in characterizing materials at field project sites and perform standard field analytical tests.
  • Collect, identify, segregate, and package hazardous/non-hazardous waste produced within customer facilities by hazard class, and complete all necessary paperwork per job.
  • Prepare waste drums for pick-up and delivery.
  • Develop good client relations through effective communication and education of waste generators and fellow employees.
  • Direct and assist field technicians with waste collection and waste practices.
  • Follow proper placarding and load segregation requirements when transporting hazardous materials.
  • Track waste in the 10‑day hazardous waste transfer facility.
  • Maintain housekeeping in the waste storage area, including inspections and quality control.
  • Assist in preparing shipments to hazardous waste disposal facilities.
  • Send off samples and understand analytical reports.
  • Maintain at least a Class B CDL with HazMat endorsement.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Qualifications

Education: Four‑year college degree (Science or Environmental majors preferred).

  • 2+ years of prior lab packing and environmental waste experience.
  • All current certifications/licenses required.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs or more.
  • Highly motivated with strong problem‑solving and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of all RCRA and DOT regulations.
  • Knowledge of all federal, state, and local laws and regulations pertaining to the Environmental Services industry.

Certifications: Hazardous Materials Handling Certification for DOT 49 CFR Transportation Regulations.

Other Requirements: Travel +50% of the time.
