Job summary

The City of Cullman is seeking a Building Inspector to conduct inspections of residential, commercial, and industrial construction to ensure compliance with adopted codes and regulations. You will review permits, plans, and site documents, perform a range of inspections, and provide guidance to achieve code compliance.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; additional coursework or training in construction technology, building inspection, code enforcement, or a related field preferred.
• Possession of a valid Alabama driver's license and the ability to maintain an acceptable driving record.
• Working knowledge of building construction methods, materials, codes, ordinances, and safety practices.
• Ability to read and interpret construction plans, blueprints, engineering drawings, specifications, plats, and site plans.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to maintain effective working relationships with contractors, property owners, design professionals, elected officials, City staff, and the general public.
• Proficiency in the use of computers, permitting software, inspection management systems, and related office technology.

Responsibilities

• Conduct inspections of residential, commercial, and industrial construction projects at various stages to verify compliance with adopted codes and regulations.
• Review permit applications, construction plans, site plans, specifications, and related documents for compliance.
• Perform foundation, framing, structural, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, final occupancy, and other required inspections.
• Identify code violations and provide guidance for corrective actions to achieve compliance.
• Issue inspection reports and maintain accurate records of inspections, violations, and permit activities.
• Investigate complaints related to building code violations, unsafe structures, construction activities, and related matters.
• Assist contractors, architects, engineers, developers, and property owners with permit requirements, code interpretations, and regulatory compliance.
• Coordinate inspection activities with contractors, utility providers, and other City departments.
• Assist with enforcement of zoning ordinances, subdivision regulations, nuisance abatement, and other regulations.
• Maintain inspection schedules and enter data into departmental software systems.
• Respond to citizen inquiries and concerns regarding construction projects, permits, and code requirements.
• Attend departmental meetings and training to maintain knowledge of applicable codes and practices.
• Provide recommendations to the Chief Building Official regarding code interpretations and process improvements.
• Perform related duties as assigned.
