Job description

Details:

On-Call Cultural Resources Field Technician--Field Archaeologist

Responsibilities:
  1. Conduct archaeological pedestrian surveys, shovel testing, auger probes, screening, and soil deposit descriptions.
  2. Document archaeological and historic resources, including taking accurate field notes, drawing soil profiles, and sketch maps.
  3. Complete site forms, narrative site descriptions, and contribute to reports as needed.
  4. Use a digital camera for photo-documentation of artifacts, features, and site locations, maintaining an accurate photo log.
  5. Perform basic artifact analysis in the field.
  6. Consult with the field supervisor regarding unusual problems and developments.
Additional Responsibilities:

Conduct cultural resources pedestrian surveys, shovel testing, GPS use, field documentation, and potentially data analysis, GIS, and reporting tasks for qualified individuals.

Travel:

Yes (100% field assignment)

Workweek:

Variable on-call, 6 days a week/60 hours per week during field assignments, often in ten 10-hour days, depending on the project, weather, and other factors.

Meals (food per diem) and lodging are paid on days off in the field.

Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Anthropology, History, Museum Studies, or related field; archaeological field school experience preferred.
  • 0-2 years' experience in cultural resources surveys or projects; coursework or lab work may substitute for experience.
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record.
  • Knowledge of survey and excavation techniques; ability to process artifacts and complete forms.
  • Strong attention to detail, eagerness to learn, and ability to follow instructions and safety procedures.
  • Ability to perform manual labor, including excavation, screening, and walking long distances.
  • Physical ability to perform bending, kneeling, standing, lifting (up to 50 lbs), and working outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Basic knowledge of GIS and Microsoft applications is helpful.
  • Flexibility for overnight travel, including out-of-state, for at least 10 days.
  • Excellent work ethic and team-player attitude.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with cultural resource management laws (Section 106 of NHPA, NEPA).
  • Experience in cultural resource surveys and artifact analysis.
  • Experience with GPS data collection is a plus.
