Qualifications

• Six months in an animal shelter, veterinary office, or related setting with animal care and handling.
• Possession of a valid California Driver's License.
• Rabies vaccines within 30 days of employment; Penal Code 832 training within six months.

Responsibilities

• Drive a vehicle to patrol jurisdictions and enforce animal regulations; inform public about animal laws and licensing; locate unlicensed or unvaccinated dogs; check rabies certificates and microchips; collect license fees.
• Prepare reports, citations, and notices of violations; maintain records; use DAS software and databases.
• Cooperate with other law enforcement; issue notices and citations; testify in court when needed.
• Ensure County vehicles are fueled and maintained; inspect vehicles daily; report maintenance needs.
• Receive and investigate complaints about stray or dangerous animals; remedy problems under supervision and guidance.
• Learn to use tranquilizer equipment for dangerous animals as a last resort; respond to emergencies involving animal bites.
• Quarantine potentially rabid animals; check intervals and release when safe; issue quarantine citations.
• Transport stray or injured animals; impound and return to owners; handle euthanasia when needed.
• May be assigned to any shift and standby or on-call.
• Photograph incidents and manage data in Chameleon; coordinate follow-up for compliance.
• Post and maintain citations; research property owner information in GIS.
• Refer public to veterinary clinics or low-cost services.
• Maintain daily canvassing records; prepare legal action documentation; testify as needed.
• Perform property rechecks to verify compliance.
• Assist during vaccination clinics or offsite events.
• Rarely assist with animal capture and transport; issue related citations.
