City of Chowchilla is seeking a non-sworn animal control worker to perform a wide range of animal control and shelter duties while enforcing applicable laws and regulations. The role involves handling animals, maintaining kennels, responding to inquiries, and assisting in court proceedings as needed.
Ideal candidates will have a high school diploma or equivalent, a CA Driver License, and the ability to obtain a 832 PC certificate within six months.

THE POSITION is a non-sworn, non-peace officer position. Conducts a wide variety of animal control and shelter operation duties. Skilled work in the enforcement of animal control laws, ordinances and regulations. Investigates and enforces state and local animal regulations; issues citations; investigates animal biters, nuisances, barking and cruelty complaints; cleans, euthanizes and feeds animals. Files, answers phones and writes reports; observes safety regulations and safe work practices particularly in the handling of animals and the operation of vehicles; investigates and reports complaints or situations involving animals, drafts bite reports for transmission to the County Health Dept.; inventories and orders supplies; makes court reports and appears in court as necessary. Answers questions and provides service to the public. Maintains and cleans the shelter kennels and buildings (scrubbing walls, sinks, toilets and picking up animal feces). Participates in the public relations activities of the division; operates city vehicles; keeps accurate records; and performs related duties as required.
PRERQUISITES:
Education and Experience: Sufficient education, training and experience to demonstrate the above knowledge, skills and abilities. This would normally be demonstrated by graduation from high school or the equivalent and one-year experience in the care and handling of animals.
Licenses, Registration, Accreditation, etc.: 832 PC Certificate or the ability to successfully complete the training within six (6) months of being hired. Possession of a valid California Driver License Class C.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
Incumbent may work with immediate supervision or independently and may be on call during off-duty hours for emergency situations. Positions in this class perform work which is structured, seldom varies, and is performed in accordance with established instructions, methods, and procedures. Incumbents receive thorough instructions when tasks are initially assigned and after receiving on-the-job training are expected to perform duties without constant supervision, and within established guidelines. As experience is acquired, the incumbent performs work with less immediate supervision.
