Job summary

IPG Photonics Corporation in Marlborough, MA is seeking a hands-on technician to calibrate, test, and characterize pulsed fiber laser systems in manufacturing, measure output power, spectrum, and pulse parameters, and troubleshoot performance issues.

You will assemble fiber-optic components, document results, work with engineering and manufacturing teams, and support continuous improvement while maintaining safety and quality standards; overtime may be required.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; related technical training preferred.
  • Experience with optical fiber preparation, splicing, and fiber-optic assembly.
  • Experience operating laser test power, spectrum, pulse waveform, and repetition rate.
  • Strong troubleshooting and root cause analysis skills in a manufacturing setting.
  • Ability to read engineering drawings and follow procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Calibrate, test, and characterize pulsed fiber laser systems during manufacturing.
  • Measure output power, spectrum, pulse waveform, duration, and repetition rate; verify beam quality.
  • Troubleshoot laser systems and conduct root cause analysis to support corrective actions.
  • Prepare optical fibers, splice, and assemble fiber-optic components into lasers.
  • Document calibration results, test outcomes, and corrective actions per procedures.
  • Maintain safety and quality compliance, and keep equipment in good condition.
  • Collaborate with engineering/manufacturing to improve processes and product reliability.
  • Support continuous improvement to enhance efficiency and quality.
  • Maintain regular attendance; overtime as needed.

Duties:

  • Perform calibration, testing, and characterization of pulsed fiber laser systems during manufacturing.
  • Measure and verify laser performance parameters, including output power, spectrum, pulse waveform, pulse duration, repetition rate, and beam quality.
  • Troubleshoot laser systems, determine root causes of performance issues, and perform detailed technical analysis to support corrective actions.
  • Perform optical fiber preparation, splicing, and fiber assembly following established manufacturing procedures.
  • Assemble and integrate fiber-optic and electro-optical components into laser.
  • Document calibration, test results, root cause investigations, and corrective actions in accordance with company procedures.
  • Maintain test equipment and ensure compliance with all safety and quality requirements, including laser safety and ESD procedures.
  • Collaborate with engineering and manufacturing teams to improve product reliability, manufacturing processes, and test procedures.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance manufacturing efficiency and product quality.
  • Regular and reliable attendance and the ability to work overtime as needed are essential functions of this position.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical training or an Associate degree in photonics, optics, electronics, laser technology, or a related field preferred.
  • Experience with optical fiber preparation, fiber splicing, and fiber-optic assembly.
  • Experience operating laser test power, optical spectrum, pulse waveform, pulse duration and repetition rate.
  • Demonstrated troubleshooting and root cause analysis skills in an optical or electronics manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, schematics, work instructions, and test procedures.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and documentation skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Self-motivated, dependable, and capable of independently performing extended calibration, testing, and technical investigations.
  • Basic computer and data entry skills.
  • Regular and reliable attendance and the ability to work overtime as needed are essential functions of this position.

Actual starting pay is determined by a number of factors including relevant skills, qualifications, and experience.
