Job summary

Future, a Primoris Company, is seeking a fiber splicer and technician in Houston, TX. The role involves splicing SM/MM fibers, preparing cables, performing live cut-overs during maintenance, and troubleshooting fiber faults.

You will read splice docs and operate splicing and test equipment in a field setting. The position requires 1–3 years of experience, a valid driver’s license, and the flexibility for day/night shifts, on-call duties, and potential long hours in challenging conditions.

Qualifications

• Fiber splicing and testing experience (1–3 years).
• Familiar with fusion machines, OTDRs, power meters and related tools.
• Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.
• Able to work independently or in a team and communicate professionally.
• Strong verbal and written communication.
• Basic Word/Excel proficiency.
• Valid driver’s license.
• On-call 7 days / 24 hours.
• Willing to work long hours or after hours if needed.
• Able to climb ladders and operate bucket trucks.
• Willingness to work in varying weather conditions.

Responsibilities

• Fusion splice SM or MM outside plant loose tube, inside plant tight buffered, and ribbon cable prep and assembly per design specs.
• Prepare armored and non-armored cables, ribbons and mid-sheath applications.
• Perform live fiber cut-overs during maintenance hours.
• Troubleshoot damaged fiber effectively and efficiently.
• Read, understand and update splice documentation and maps as required.
• Operate fiber tools and test equipment including fusion splicers, power meter, OTDR, VFL and Traffic Identifier.

Job Overview: Including but not limited to the following:

Responsibilities

• Fusion splice SM or MM outside plant loose tube, inside plant tight buffered, and ribbon fiber optic cable Prep, dress, and store fiber optic cabling to specifications and assemble equipment according to design specifications
• Preparation of armored and non-armored cables, ribbon and loose tube fiber and mid-sheath applications
• Perform live fiber cut-overs during maintenance hours
• Ability to troubleshoot damaged fiber effectively and efficiently
• Proficient in using fiber tools and fiber optic test equipment including fusion splicers, power meter OTDR, VFL and Traffic Identifier
• Ability to read, understand and update splice documentation and maps as required
• Perform other duties as required

Skills and Qualifications

• 1-3 years of fiber splicing and testing
• Working knowledge of the proper use and maintenance of fusion machines, OTDRs, power meters and tools of the trade
• Organized, with a strong attention to detail
• Ability to work independently or in a team environment & communicate professionally with co-workers and customers
• Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
• Basic Word/Excel skills/ computer literacy preferred.
• Requires a mixture of day and night work.
• Must have a Valid driver’s license
• Be available for 7 day / 24-hour stand by on-call rotation as needed
• Ability and willingness to work long and unpredictable hours if required, including work after normal business hours in the event physical restoration of fiber plant is needed
• Ability to climb up and down ladders and operate a bucket truck as needed
• Willingness to operate within a schedule that is subject to inclement weather conditions

Physical Requirements

• Must be able to lift up to 75 lbs.
