Job summary

Fibersmith seeks a seasoned Fiber Optics Outside Plant Inspector to oversee aerial and underground fiber construction in the field. You’ll travel extensively, living on the road as needed, and ensure work aligns with drawings, specs, and standards.

Responsibilities include documenting field conditions, reviewing prints, and coordinating with contractors and project teams. You’ll identify issues early and communicate corrective actions to keep projects on track and within scope.

Travel-Based Field Position

Help Build the Fiber Networks That Keep Communities Connected

Fibersmith helps telecom providers bring high-speed internet to communities through engineering, construction oversight, field support, and project management. We help turn project plans into real fiber networks in the ground and on the poles.

We’re looking for an experienced Fiber Optics Outside Plant Inspector who understands fiber construction, is comfortable working independently in the field, and can effectively communicate with contractors, project leadership, and engineering teams.

This is not a desk job. You’ll spend the majority of your time at active construction sites overseeing aerial, underground, splicing, and related fiber construction activities. You’ll be responsible for monitoring construction quality and progress, documenting field conditions and changes, identifying issues, and helping ensure work is completed according to project requirements, construction drawings, and applicable standards.

This position is intended for someone who already has field experience in telecommunications, utility construction, fiber inspection, or a closely related area and is ready to take on greater responsibility in the field.

Important Travel Requirement

This position requires extensive travel. Work is performed almost entirely at project locations, and applicants should expect to live on the road during assigned projects. Assignments may last for extended periods depending on the project.

What You’ll Do

Responsibilities may include:

• Independently inspecting aerial, underground, splicing, and related fiber optic construction activities
• Monitoring contractor work for compliance with construction drawings, project specifications, applicable standards, and customer requirements
• Reviewing construction maps and prints and identifying conflicts, discrepancies, or necessary field changes
• Documenting construction progress, completed quantities, materials, field conditions, and deviations from approved plans
• Preparing and maintaining accurate daily reports, redlines, cut sheets, photo documentation, and other project records
• Tracking field changes and ensuring construction maps accurately reflect installed facilities
• Identifying construction deficiencies, quality concerns, safety issues, schedule risks, and other potential project impacts
• Communicating issues and recommended corrections to contractors, Lead Inspectors, Resident Engineers, project managers, and internal design teams
• Verifying that corrective work has been completed when deficiencies are identified
• Coordinating with contractors and project personnel to help resolve field questions and construction conflicts
• Participating in project meetings, construction meetings, and field coordination discussions as needed
• Monitoring construction progress and communicating potential schedule concerns
• Assisting with verification of contractor quantities and completed work when required
• Maintaining professional working relationships with clients, contractors, property owners, vendors, and project team members
• Providing guidance to less-experienced field personnel when needed

The right person for this role is experienced, dependable, detail-oriented, and comfortable making decisions in an active construction environment.

You should be able to understand how fiber networks are constructed, recognize when field conditions or completed work do not match project requirements, and communicate those concerns clearly and professionally.

Qualifications include:

• Previous experience in fiber optic construction, OSP inspection, telecommunications construction, utility construction, or a closely related field
• Experience inspecting or working around aerial and/or underground fiber construction
• Ability to read and understand construction drawings, maps, specifications, and project documentation
• Working knowledge of common fiber construction methods, materials, and terminology
• Ability to identify construction deficiencies, field conflicts, and potential quality issues
• Experience completing daily reports, redlines, photos, construction documentation, and other field records
• Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate project documentation
• Ability to communicate professionally and confidently with contractors, clients, engineers, and project leadership
• Ability to work independently and manage responsibilities across an assigned project area
• Ability and commitment to travel extensively and live on the road during project assignments
• Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather, terrain, and active construction conditions
• Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Excel and Outlook
• Experience with GIS, digital mapping, field data collection, or construction tracking software is a plus
• High School Diploma or GED required
• Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record

Additional consideration may be given to candidates with experience in:

• Fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) construction
• Underground conduit, microfiber, duct, and directional boring
• Aerial strand, cable placement, make-ready, and pole-line construction
• Fiber splicing and testing
• Construction quality assurance or quality control
• Utility locating and right-of-way construction
• RUS/USDA telecommunications construction standards
• GIS-based construction mapping and field documentation
• Broadband construction projects involving multiple contractors or large geographic areas
