Job summary

Coastal Fiber is seeking a Fiber Optic Lineman to build and maintain outside plant telecom infrastructure across Virginia. The role includes aerial and underground fiber construction, pole transfers, and safe operation of bucket trucks and lifts.

You will read blueprints, install fiber, and ensure quality standards are met on every job. Applicants should have about 5 years of telecom or fiber experience, CDL preferred, and a strong safety mindset.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Experience in telecommunications or fiber optics preferred.
  • Ability to read construction prints and maps.
  • Proven safety record and ability to work at heights.

Responsibilities

  • Construct aerial fiber routes and lashing of fiber.
  • Perform pole transfers and reinstatement work as needed.
  • Climb utility poles and work safely from bucket trucks and lifts.
  • Install fiber through conduits and microduct systems.
  • Place tracer wire, pedestals, and related above-ground assets.
  • Read and interpret maps, prints, and work packages.
  • Inspect work for quality and communicate with supervisors.
  • Operate safely following OSHA/NESC guidelines.
  • Complete daily production reports and coordinate with crews.
  • Assist with emergency restoration when required.

As a Fiber Optic Lineman, you'll construct and maintain outside plant (OSP) telecommunications infrastructure supporting broadband internet, enterprise fiber networks, and utility communications. This position performs both aerial and underground fiber construction throughout Virginia and surrounding areas.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Construct new aerial fiber optic runs by building strand, lashing fiber and over-lashing existing plant..
  • Complete pole transfers during utility pole replacements, including straight-through, three-way, and four-way transfers.
  • Climb utility poles using approved climbing equipment and work safely from bucket trucks and aerial lifts.
  • Install and blow fiber through microduct and conduit systems underground.
  • Install tracer wire, pedestals, handholes, vaults, and related outside plant infrastructure.
  • Perform hand excavation around existing underground utilities when required.
  • Read construction prints, staking sheets, utility maps, and work packages.
  • Inspect completed work to ensure it meets customer specifications and company quality standards.
  • Perform emergency restoration work and outage response when necessary.
  • Complete daily production reports and communicate effectively with supervisors and customers.
  • Follow OSHA, NESC, utility owner, customer, and company safety requirements at all times.
Requirements
  • Approximately 5 years of telecommunications, fiber optic, CATV, or outside plant construction experience preferred (strong junior linemen with the required core skills are encouraged to apply).
  • Proven experience building strand and fiber optic cable.
  • Experience lashing and overlashing fiber optic cable.
  • Ability to perform utility pole transfers, including straight-through and intersection transfers.
  • Experience blowing fiber optic cable through smooth wall rigid innerduct systems with a blowing machine. 1,500' shots are common installs.
  • Ability to climb utility poles safely and confidently for daily work.
  • Experience operating bucket trucks and aerial lifts.
  • Ability to identify existing utilities and safely work around energized infrastructure.
  • Strong understanding of aerial fiber construction methods and outside plant practices.
  • Valid driver's license (CDL preferred or willingness to obtain).
Preferred Qualifications
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 Certification.
  • Knowledge of OSHA 1910.268 and NESC requirements.
  • Experience with FTTH, FTTX, GPON, enterprise fiber, or rural broadband construction.
  • Experience with utility make-ready work.
  • Class A CDL.
  • Previous experience with telecommunications contractors or utility construction companies.
