Job description

Fiber Laser Engineer, Boston Area Suburb, to 150k

About RA’s client: Our client, founded by Quantum Technology pioneers, is designing, developing and manufacturing high reliability bespoke fiber lasers, fiber amplifiers, and fiber laser systems. These lasers offer the power, and low noise required in demanding quantum applications. With a very strong backlog and more orders coming in, they are embarking on a dramatic period of growth. People who join our client will be given all the responsibility and challenge they desire as the company grows in 2026

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Fiber Laser Engineer with a strong background in commercial laser product development and manufacturing. The successful candidate will design, develop, and manufacture advanced fiber‑laser systems products for quantum applications. This role requires hands‑on expertise in fiber laser architecture, strong problem‑solving skills, and experience working closely with a dynamic team to ensure high performance, repeatability, and scalability in manufacturing.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and develop low‑noise, high‑power fiber‑laser systems optimized for performance, reliability, and manufacturability.
  • Develop robust commercial products, including design for manufacturability (DFM), alignment tolerances, and assembly procedures.
  • Support new product introduction (NPI) activities, including prototype builds, verification testing, and transition to volume manufacturing.
  • Conduct laser characterization and actively contribute to product assembly.
  • Develop manufacturing, quality, and supply‑chains and establish assembly procedures, test protocols, and acceptance criteria.
  • Generate comprehensive technical documentation, including specifications, test plans, analysis reports, operational procedures, and safety guidelines.
  • Provide technical guidance and training to technicians for system assembly, and testing.
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of industry experience in fiber laser development and product engineering.
  • Demonstrated experience developing commercial laser systems or photonics products, including transition from prototype to production.
  • Practical experience with fiber laser components and architectures, including Yb-doped, Er-doped, and Tm-doped fiber amplifiers and oscillators.
  • Proficiency with fiber‑optic assembly tools and optical instrumentation, including fusion splicers, fiber cleavers, optical spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes, wavemeters, and beam profilers.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate complex engineering concepts.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s or PhD in Optical Engineering, Physics, or related discipline.
  • 10+ years of experience in commercial fiber laser product development.
  • Proficiency in numerical modeling and simulation of laser systems, including gain dynamics, thermal effects, and ASE suppression.
  • Programming experience in Python, MATLAB, or LabVIEW for system control, automation, and test development.
  • Experience designing and integrating free‑space optical subsystems, including mirrors, polarization optics.
  • Experience with design for manufacturability (DFM), tolerance analysis, and production test development for photonics systems.
  • Proficiency in numerical modeling and simulation of laser systems, including gain dynamics, thermal effects, and ASE suppression.
  • Programming experience in Python, MATLAB, or LabVIEW for system control, automation, and test development.
  • Familiarity with embedded control electronics, microcontrollers, or IoT‑based system monitoring.
  • Experience with nonlinear optical frequency conversion and cavity‑enhanced systems.
