Student Assistant Responsibilities
Student Assistants perform duties ranging from unskilled to skilled, with assignments designed specifically for students. Work may involve manual, clerical, and public‑contact tasks. The nature of the work varies by department and may include the use of various equipment and software tools.
Representative Duties
Specific duties are defined by the relevant division or department. Considerable on‑the‑job training may occur.
Student Assistant Levels
- Student Assistant I – Entry Level / Semi‑skilled
- Under immediate supervision; tasks are routine and repetitive.
- Standardized procedures and specific instructions.
- Supervisor responsible for workflow and production levels.
- Student Assistant II – Intermediate / Advanced
- Under general supervision; strategies left to the employee.
- Less routine tasks requiring moderate responsibility.
- Access to sophisticated data systems and confidential information.
- Requires at least one year of comparable student‑assistant experience.
- Student Assistant III – Specialist / Lead
- Under general supervision with significant independence.
- Broad skill set; extensive training required.
- Requires at least two years of comparable student‑assistant experience.
- May direct work of lower‑level student assistants.
Qualifications
- Students must be enrolled in at least six units for the current semester.
- Must be awarded Federal Work‑Study through the Financial Aid Office to be eligible.
- Must meet satisfactory academic progress (SAP).
- Must have financial need as calculated by the Financial Aid Office.
Education and Experience
- Student Assistant I – Little or no prior experience or education required.
- Student Assistant II – Some previous knowledge, experience, or education required.
- Student Assistant III – Prior experience, education, or specialized skills required.
Skills and Competencies
- Required skills to perform job assignments.
- Limited independent judgment and decision‑making based on level.
- Ability to balance work and studies.
Conditions of Employment
- Student Assistants may not exceed 19.5 working hours per week during the fall and spring semesters; maximum 28 hours per week outside those semesters.
- Prohibited from being employed in any other capacity in the district during the same fiscal year.
- Employment contingent upon verification of Federal Work‑Study award, class schedule, employment history, background verification, eligibility to work in the United States, and approval by the CCCD Board of Trustees.
- Regular attendance is essential; inability to meet attendance may jeopardize employment.
- Mandatory reporting responsibilities under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and Title IX compliance.

- Participate in a new hire onboarding appointment with an Employment Services Representative.
