Job summary

Arlington/Roe & Co. is seeking a Farm Underwriter for its Personal Lines team. This role offers remote work and focuses on collaborating with agents and carriers to grow a profitable farm and ranch book in the Midwest.

Ideal candidate will have 3+ years underwriting experience in farm/ranch, pursue AU/AFIS, and demonstrate strong decision-making, communication, and relationship-building skills within a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

• 3+ years underwriting experience; Farm & Ranch a plus.
• AU or AFIS designation: in progress or completed.
• Independent decision making with limited supervision.
• Strong written and verbal communication; detail oriented.
• Proficient with multiple carrier systems and MS Office in a paperless environment.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate and analyze new submissions, renewals and endorsements per carriers’ guidelines.
• Within delegated authority, accept, reject or modify business for profitability.
• Partner with manager, carriers and state territory managers to grow our farm and ranch book.
• Build and maintain positive agency relationships via calls, emails and visits.
• Contribute as a leader with product knowledge and underwriting expertise.
• Focus on metrics: premium growth, loss ratio, new business hit ratio, renewal retention.
• Train agencies on carriers’ products and underwriting philosophies.

Summary Job Statement:

This position requires collaboration, underwriting, and relationship building/sales with a willingness to succeed. Ability to further develop our business and market position in the Midwest as an underwriter with production responsibilities will be a priority. The candidate for this position must develop and maintain productive working relationships internally and externally with our agents and insurance carriers.

Education:

Bachelor’s degree preferred.

Qualifications:

• 3 or more years underwriting experience. Farm and Ranch experience is a plus
• Successfully completed or actively pursuing insurance designation: Associate in Underwriting (AU) or Agribusiness and Farm Insurance Specialists (AFIS)
• Ability to demonstrate decision making authority with limited supervision
• Ability to pay attention to detail, prioritize and make sound decisions in a fast-paced environment
• Strong verbal, written and interpersonal skills
• Results oriented
• Team player, strong work ethic and willingness to take initiative
• Possess a high level of proficiency using multiple carrier systems, agency management system, Microsoft Office Suite and working in a paperless environment

Essential Functions:

• Evaluate and analyze new business submissions, renewals and endorsements to ensure they meet the carriers’ underwriting guidelines
• Within delegated authority accept, reject or modify new and renewal business to ensure a profitable book of business
• Partner with manager, carriers and state territory managers to profitably manage and grow our book of farm and ranch business
• Build and maintain positive agency relationships via phone calls, emails and agency visits
• Contribute as a leader within the department regarding product knowledge, carrier knowledge and underwriting expertise
• Solid knowledge of technical underwriting and consistently make sound underwriting decisions
• Serve as a resource for internal staff when addressing technical underwriting issues
• Focus on key metrics including but not limited to premium growth, loss ratio, new business hit ratio, and renewal retention ratio
• Train and educate agencies on carriers’ products and underwriting philosophies.
• Performs other duties as assigned
