Job summary

Tuskegee University is seeking a Farm Research Assistant to support a diversified university farming operation using field and greenhouse systems for cattle, poultry, crops, and more. The role involves assisting researchers with field crops, greenhouse care, and on-farm activities, with emphasis on teamwork and reliable data collection in a university setting.

No formal experience is required, but candidates should enjoy farming and be self-motivated, with willingness to learn and help in CAENS

Qualifications

• High school diploma, GED, or Associate Degree/Certificate from a Trade School.
• Some experience working with plants and the care of plants or farm animals.
• Five years or more experience working with plants and the care of plants or farm animals.
• Some experience in operating heavy-duty farm equipment and trailer trucks.
• Five years or more experience working with operating heavy-duty farm equipment.
• Ability to communicate with clients and provide leadership at the unit.

Responsibilities

• Assist researchers with field crop work: planting, cultivating, pesticide/fertilizer applications, harvest, and data collection.
• Help in general farm care and maintenance.
• Support greenhouse experiments, plant care, and head house management.
• Provide on-farm and field assistance to farmers in the counties.
• Assist with livestock care, feeding, and health data collection.
• Operate farm equipment and implements as directed.
• Maintain animal facilities, fences, pastures and paddocks; assist with hay cutting and baling.
• Perform minor repairs on equipment and implements.
• Prepare outdoor labs for student experiential learning and workshops.
• Record and maintain animal data; participate in departmental activities.
