Job summary

Buy Sod is seeking an experienced Farm Mechanic to join our team in Mooresville, NC. This full-time role focuses on repairing and maintaining farm equipment, keeping repair logs, and ordering parts as needed.

You will work under the Equipment Manager, prioritizing safety, efficiency, and accuracy while supporting irrigation systems and delivery operations as required.

Qualifications

  • 1-3 years mechanical experience.
  • 1-3 years diesel experience.
  • Certification from trade or technical school in maintenance/repair
  • ASE certifications appreciated.
  • Knowledge of electrical, hydraulic, and air systems.

Responsibilities

  • Meet safety requirements and address safety concerns promptly.
  • Maintain organized work area (shop, truck, field, etc).
  • Maintain inventory of tools and resources.
  • Assist with purchasing of repair parts and maintain inventory.
  • Execute equipment repair and maintenance with timelines.
  • Maintain a preventative maintenance program for all equipment.
  • Inspect and repair equipment (mechanical, electrical, hydraulic).
  • Assist with irrigation system maintenance/repairs.
  • Maintain accurate repair records and equipment condition logs.
  • Be flexible to assist in other departments as needed.

Buy Sod, a multi-state agribusiness company with sod farms in the Carolinas, Florida, Georgia, and Tennessee, is currently seeking to hire an experienced and motivated Full Time Farm Mechanic to join our team. This program includes the repair of failing equipment, keeping records of parts and labor needed to maintain each piece of equipment, and placing orders for parts and supplies needed for equipment or service. The Mechanic properly communicates any needs or problems relating to the maintenance or repair of equipment to the Equipment Manager. The Mechanic places safety as a top priority and is responsible for maintaining a clean service area.

Farm Mechanic Position Responsibilities:
  • Meet all company and equipment-related safety requirements and inform management/address all safety concerns in a timely manner.
  • Maintain a neat and organized work area to include shop, truck, equipment, field, etc.
  • Maintain inventory of company tools and resources.
  • Assist Farm Management with purchasing of repair parts and maintain inventory of replacement supplies.
  • Execute equipment repair and maintenance work communicating timelines to Farm Management.
  • Maintain a preventative maintenance program on all equipment to avoid unnecessary downtime.
  • Inspect, diagnose, and repair equipment up to and including mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic components.
  • Assist with maintenance/repairs for farm irrigation systems (pivots, pumps, etc).
  • Maintain accurate records for repairs, equipment conditions, and preventative maintenance for all equipment.
  • Depending on workloads, weather/field conditions, staffing, etc., must be able to assist in different departments as instructed by Farm Management.
Delivery Focus Specific:
  • Ensure that all weekly Delivery equipment inspections are completed thoroughly and consistently, to include weekly and annual (Department of Transportation) DOT inspections.
  • Ensure all equipment is leak free to include fuel, motor oil, water, antifreeze, hydraulic fluid, etc. at the time of release.
  • Work in conjunction with the Location Delivery Managers (LDM) to ensure that equipment is in good working order so that deliveries will be made safely and on time.
  • Assist Farm Management in tracking delivery equipment repairs, time and materials for billing purposes.
Farm Mechanic Position Requirements:
  • Must demonstrate the ability to be a team player and build positive working relationships with others.
  • 1-3 years mechanical experience required.
  • 1-3 years diesel experience required.
  • Certification from trade or technical school in maintenance repair and/or ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certifications appreciated.
  • Knowledge and ability to operate electronic diagnostic computer/equipment highly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of light and heavy maintenance equipment and automotive apparatuses.
  • Ability to help diagnose mechanical issues and determine appropriate maintenance work.
  • Knowledge of electrical, air, and hydraulic systems and ability to repair.
  • Knowledge of Air Conditioning repair.
  • Knowledge of repairing hydraulic cylinders.
  • Ability to weld and fabricate.
  • Knowledge, experience ability to operate technology such as computers, tablets, smartphones etc.
  • Skilled in the use of a variety of equipment repair tools.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and keep records.
  • Ability to stay organized with multiple projects ongoing.
  • Ability to adapt to any situation and environment.
  • Ability to understand the concept and consequences of grass cross-contamination.
  • Must have the ability to discern what issues need to be brought to upper management.
  • Ability to work flexible hours to include, but not limited to, early AM/PM, nights and weekends and hours that could fluctuate day-to-day.
  • Ability to be on-call as needed/respond to calls in a timely manner.
Farm Focus Specific:
  • 1-3 years tractor mechanic experience.
Delivery Focus Specific:
  • A valid Class A Commercial Driver License preferred.
  • Ability to change and repair tires.
  • Ability to change brakes on 18-wheeler.
  • Ability to replace wheel seals.
