Role and Facility Information

Rolling hills, sparkling lakes, and endless hours of sunshine every year make Merritt (population: 7,051) a haven for four-season outdoor recreation. The summer offers some of the best sailing and windsurfing in North America, and nearby Nicola Lake offers endless choices for water activities. The area is also known for beautiful horseback riding opportunities as well as camping and fishing. An almost endless trail system renowned for mountain biking and hiking is also at your fingertips. Winter brings champagne powder and opportunities for Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, ice fishing, and curling. Merritt enjoys a thriving arts community, with an art gallery located in Merritt’s historic Court House, and an active Arts Council, making the community’s arts flourish. Merritt is at the junction of the Coquihalla Highway system and is a 3-hour drive to five international airports, providing quick access to destinations and markets worldwide. Merritt boasts a favourable climate with long hours of sunshine and very little precipitation throughout the year. For more information about Merritt, visit https://www.merritt.ca.

Nicola Valley Hospital and Health Centre is a Level 1 Community Hospital with a modern 24-hour Emergency Room. Onsite quarters are available in a separate wing of the hospital and include a Queen-sized bed, shower, and washroom. This facility is a 12-bed department with 1 trauma bay (2 beds), 6 monitored beds, 3 fast track beds, and 1 fast track chair in the Emergency Room. The hospital also provides inpatient and outpatient services such as Laboratory, Electrocardiogram (ECG), Radiology, Physiotherapy, and Spirometry. Additional services include Home Care, Home Support, Public Health, Urology, Diabetes and Dietician Teaching, as well as Mental Health services (OAT). A Residential Care facility is located only 3 kilometers from the hospital. Kamloops is the nearest tertiary referral site. Hospital transportation is supported by an Ambulance Station on the same property as the hospital. In emergencies, a helicopter and the High Acuity Response Team (HART) are dispatched from Kamloops to transport patients to an advanced care center.

Join our team and carve your own path! Scheduled emergency physicians enjoy a rewarding 24-hour shift, providing exclusive coverage to the Emergency Department from 0800 to 0800. Local physicians with hospital privileges participate in an inpatient call rotation and choose their ED shift frequency within a roster that includes regular locum physicians.

In this rural community, CCFP-EM/FP-EM certification is not mandatory to practice emergency medicine.

We are proud to collaborate with the University of British Columbia’s Southern Medical Program, offering opportunities to impact 4th-year medical students and Family Practice Residents through teaching. There are also many other opportunities within the medical community to broaden your scope of practice.

Leadership Development Opportunities are available through Interior Health’s NAVIG8 Program. The NAVIG8 Emerging Physician Leaders Program is designed to develop leadership skills early in physicians’ careers.

Locum opportunities are available for those interested in visiting the area before making a permanent decision.
