Job summary

Penn State University is seeking an Outdoor Leadership instructor to lead multi-day fall trips and mentor student participants across activities such as backpacking, canoeing, and climbing. Strong planning, safety, and communication are required.

The role involves trip planning, risk management, logistics, post-trip reporting, and collaboration with a program coordinator. OLTC or equivalent training and WFA/CPR certification are mandatory, with WFR preferred.

Qualifications

• Must complete the Outdoor Leadership Training Course (OLTC) or equivalent outdoor leadership training.
• Possess (and maintain) valid Wilderness First Aid (WFA) & CPR/AED certification; Wilderness First Responder (WFR) preferred.
• Documented outdoor/adventure leadership experience with activity-specific assessments.

Responsibilities

• Lead multi-day fall break trips with activities such as backpacking, canoeing, caving, and more.
• Plan and prepare trips: itineraries, food, equipment, and logistics; develop Emergency Action Plans.
• Manage logistical and interpersonal aspects of extended outdoor experiences; supervise meals and lead groups.
• Drive University vehicles (pass MVR); coordinate with co-leaders; teach and model safe practices.
• Complete post-trip tasks: cleanup, post-trip report, and peer feedback.
• Other duties as directed by the Program Coordinator/Assistant Director.
