Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required.
• Eligibility to obtain Maryland MSDE certification within a prescribed period.
• Fluency in American Sign Language and written English.
• Knowledge of Deaf culture and Deaf education.

Responsibilities

• Assess and teach Deaf students, implementing Maryland’s state standards and developing IEPs.
• Create and maintain a classroom, preparing weekly lesson plans based on assessments and data.
• Teach lessons using bilingual pedagogy and differentiated instruction, design educational materials, and collect data for planning.
• Develop IEPs, write quarterly progress reports, and apply accommodations during teaching and assessments.
• Maintain grade books, portfolios, unit plans, daily attendance, and emergency lesson plans.
• Utilize effective classroom management to promote learning and model appropriate behavior.

Overview

Maryland School for the Deaf (MSD) is a diverse, bilingual community partnering with families to provide equitable and exemplary education to Deaf students. We seek dedicated individuals to join the educational team for the 2026-2027 school year.

Location

Frederick Campus, 101 Clarke Place, Frederick, MD 21705.

Main Purpose of the Position

Develop and implement a bilingual educational program for Deaf students in an accessible environment, providing an enriched bicultural setting that supports optimal social and emotional growth.

Position Duties

• Assess and teach Deaf students, implementing Maryland’s state standards and developing individualized education plans (IEPs).
• Create and maintain a classroom conducive to learning, preparing weekly lesson plans based on student assessments and data.
• Teach lessons using bilingual pedagogy and differentiated instruction, design educational materials, and collect data to guide individualized planning.
• Develop IEPs, write quarterly progress reports, and apply IEP accommodations and supplementary aids during teaching and assessments.
• Maintain a grade book, portfolios, unit plans, daily attendance, and emergency classroom lesson plans.
• Utilize effective classroom management to promote optimal learning, model appropriate behavior, and encourage self‑control.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required.
• Eligibility to apply for or willingness to obtain certification from the Maryland State Department of Education within a prescribed period.
• Fluency in American Sign Language and written English.
• Knowledge of Deaf culture, Deaf education, and ability to teach students with varying educational and language acquisition backgrounds.

Desired or Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Education or Special Education of Deaf students.
• Maryland State Department of Education Certification.

Special Requirements

• New hires subject to a criminal background investigation at own expense.
• Submission of three letters of recommendation mandatory.
