Job summary

The Maryland School for the Deaf seeks a School Psychologist to support students from early childhood through high school by applying expertise in mental health, learning, and behavior to foster academic, social, emotional, and behavioral success.

This 11-month position enhances teachers’ capacity and strengthens home–school–community connections to promote well-being and positive educational outcomes.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in School Psychology is required.
  • MSDE School Psychologist License is required or eligible to obtain it in a defined time.
  • Experience working with Deaf or hard of hearing students.
  • Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) is required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct diagnostic/assessment and counseling services to MSD students.
  • Participate in IEP meetings and coordinate with educational teams.
  • Offer professional consultation and training to staff and families.
  • Support PBIS and MTSS initiatives and develop evidence-based interventions.
  • Collaborate across Frederick and Columbia campuses to address student needs.

Introduction

The Maryland School for the Deaf provides an inclusive, language-rich environment for deaf and hard of hearing students from birth through age 21. Rooted in a bilingual education approach, we ensure full access to American Sign Language and English across comprehensive academic, extracurricular, and student life programs. In partnership with families and communities, we empower students to think critically and develop a sense of self and belonging.

This is an 11-month position.

LOCATION OF POSITION

The position will be based primarily on the Frederick Campus; however, the School Psychologist will also carry a caseload of students on the Columbia Campus and must be able to travel between both locations as needed.

MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB

The school psychologist supports students from early childhood through high school by applying expertise in mental health, learning, and behavior to help children and youth succeed academically, socially, emotionally, and behaviorally. This position enhances teachers’ capacity to teach and students’ capacity to learn by partnering with families, teachers, school administrators, and other school professionals to create safe, healthy, and supportive learning environments. The role also strengthens connections between home, school, and the broader community to promote student well‑being and positive educational outcomes.

POSITION DUTIES

The school psychologist is an 11‑month position responsible for providing direct diagnostic/assessment and counseling services to MSD students, participating in IEP meetings, and offering professional consultation and training to school staff and families. The role supports both campuses and collaborates closely with educational teams to address student needs, including providing behavioral support through the assessment of student behavior, development of evidence‑based interventions, and guidance to staff on implementing effective strategies. The school psychologist supports several school teams and committees, including the Admissions Review Team (ART), Threat Assessment Team, Research Review Committee, and initiatives related to PBIS and MTSS, while maintaining ongoing communication with administrative staff and school personnel regarding student mental health needs and services. The position is supervised by the Supervisor of Mental Health and Behavioral Support Services and may also provide supervision to school psychology and counseling interns or practicum students.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master’s Degree in School Psychology is required.
  • School Psychologists must be credentialed by the state in which they work. The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) School Psychologist License is required (or the ability to obtain it in a specific time).
  • Experience working with students who are Deaf or hard of hearing.
  • Fluency in ASL.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Several years of experience in the field is preferred (but not required).

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

School Psychologists must be credentialed by the state in which they work. The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) School Psychologist License is required (or the ability to obtain it in a specific time).

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

New hires are subject to a criminal background investigation at their own expense (Maryland Code, Family Law Article 1, Sections 5-560 – 5-568).

Candidates will need to provide three letters of recommendation with their application.

Candidates will also need to submit several work samples, including redacted assessment reports.
