Position Summary:

The Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher plans and delivers engaging, developmentally appropriate instruction that helps middle school students apply practical skills and make informed choices in everyday life. Through discussion, projects, and supervised hands-on learning, the teacher builds students' understanding of nutrition and food preparation, consumer and financial decisions, and other topics in the district's FACS curriculum.

Successful candidates will possess the following qualifications, required knowledge, skills, and abilities:
  • Valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with a Family and Consumer Sciences endorsement valid for the assigned grade levels, or other licensure that the district verifies as appropriate for the specific assignment.
    • Additional core subject endorsements, preferred
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Successful teaching experience with middle school students preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of FACS content and the ability to design age-appropriate, hands-on learning experiences.
  • Ability to plan and deliver high-quality instruction aligned with district curriculum and applicable learning standards, using assessment evidence to adjust instruction.
  • Ability to differentiate instruction, provide appropriate supports, and create a welcoming classroom for students with varied strengths, needs, cultures, and backgrounds.
  • Ability to establish positive relationships with students, communicate with families, and collaborate with colleagues and support staff.
  • Strong organization, classroom management, communication, and professional judgment, including attention to student privacy and safety.
  • Ability to use instructional technology purposefully to support student learning.

Essential Functions:
  • Plan and teach FACS lessons and projects that develop practical knowledge, critical thinking, collaboration, and responsible decision-making.
  • Explicitly teach and reinforce safe practices for food handling, kitchen tools and equipment, and other hands-on activities; supervise students closely during labs and projects.
  • Establish clear learning goals, use varied assessments, provide timely feedback, and maintain accurate records of student progress.
  • Differentiate lessons and tasks, implement students' IEPs and Section 504 plans as applicable, and work with colleagues to support students through district intervention processes.
  • Manage materials, supplies, equipment, and the learning space responsibly; report maintenance or safety concerns promptly.
  • Create a positive, respectful learning environment and manage student behavior in accordance with district expectations.
  • Communicate with families about learning and student progress, and collaborate with colleagues on curriculum, student support, and school improvement.
  • Participate in professional learning, team meetings, and building or district committees as assigned.
  • Ensure student safety and respond appropriately to emergencies; perform other duties consistent with the position as assigned by the Principal or designee.
  • Manage course supply budget; order/shop for all supplies/groceries needed for class

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • Standing approximately 30-35% and for periods of up to 30 minutes required. Walking approximately 30-35% for periods of up to 15 minutes. Sitting 30-40%. Teacher discretion is used to determine when to sit, stand, and walk as appropriate.
  • Lift and carry up to 10 pounds
  • May need to navigate uneven surfaces for some assignments.
  • May need to be outside at times.

Salary: According to Collective Bargaining Agreement with Gower Education Association
