Job summary

The San Diego LGBT Community Center is seeking a Facility Technician to support maintenance and custodial care for its facilities. The role involves general repairs, preventive maintenance, and ensuring a safe environment for staff and visitors.

Job description

Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Senior Director of Facility Operations, the Facility Technician is responsible for supporting the daily maintenance, custodial care, safety, and overall appearance of all properties owned and operated by The San Diego LGBT Center. This position performs routine and preventive maintenance, minor repairs, cleaning, room and event set‑ups, supply stocking, grounds upkeep, and timely response to facility needs to ensure welcoming, clean, safe, and functional spaces for staff, community members, tenants, and visitors. The role requires hands‑on technical maintenance skills and the ability to complete repairs, including, but not limited to, painting, plumbing, low‑voltage electrical work, minor fixture and equipment repairs, and the safe use of hand and power tools. The Facility Technician works in tandem with the Facilities Coordinator, who serves as the primary point of communication for vendor relationships, to help identify maintenance concerns, support vendor access and follow‑up as needed, and complete work in accordance with agency policies, safety standards, and professional standards of excellence.

Primary Roles & Responsibilities
  • Perform general maintenance and repairs including, but not limited to, painting, plumbing, low-voltage electrical work, minor fixture and equipment repairs, and other facility-related repair needs.
  • Identify and resolve equipment malfunctions.
  • Conduct preventive maintenance and respond to emergency repair requests.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations.
  • Landscape and maintain the appearance of grounds.
  • Assist with general daily housekeeping.
  • Work in tandem with the Facilities Coordinator to support scheduling, site access, follow‑up, and completion of services.
  • Provide consumable maintenance materials needed at each site.
  • Organize and maintain all tools and equipment, ensuring all are in proper order and safe to operate.
  • Coordinate maintenance, inspections, custodial needs, vendor access, and other facilities items at Sunburst Youth Housing and other Center properties.
  • Assist with orientation/onboarding of new staff to Center facilities.
Required Qualifications
  • Education/Experience: At least 1 year of demonstrated experience in facilities maintenance.
  • Professional Skills: Good communication skills, both verbal and written, to interact with colleagues, management, and external contractors. Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical personnel.
  • Technical Skills: Demonstrated ability to safely use hand and power tools and perform basic maintenance repairs such as painting, plumbing, low‑voltage electrical work, and minor fixture or equipment repairs.
  • Personal Skills: Outgoing and personable; comfort with speaking to staff and tenants about facility maintenance; familiarity with the LGBTQ+ communities and the work of The Center.
  • Technology Skills: Proficiency with PC/Windows‑based environments, and Microsoft Office, particularly Word, Outlook, and Excel.
  • Language Skills: Fluency in English.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Education/Experience: General building operations, or a related field is preferred.
  • Professional Skills: Demonstrated competence in working with a variety of diverse populations.
  • Language Skills: Fluency in Spanish is highly preferred.
Compensation & Benefits
  • Compensation: The pay range for this position is $23.00 – $24.35 per hour and is commensurate with experience. This is a Full‑Time Regular Non‑Exempt position.
