Job summary

Mercy is seeking a Facility Systems Technician to operate, maintain, and repair HVAC, boilers, refrigeration and related building systems in Mercy facilities. The role requires minimal supervision and a focus on safety and environment of care.

You will work with electrical, plumbing, and control systems, prioritizing tasks, and communicating with hospital staff to ensure continuous operation and patient safety.

Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent; technical or vocational training preferred.
  • Experience in HVAC, boilers and refrigeration equipment is required or preferred.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to read technical manuals.

Responsibilities

  • Operate, maintain, and repair electrical/plumbing systems, movable equipment, and building components.
  • Provide service with exceptional customer communication and support Mercy facilities.
  • Ensure a safe working environment and support Environment of Care initiatives at Mercy.

This is a skilled position requiring advanced knowledge of boiler, HVAC, refrigeration, electrical distribution, control system maintenance and operation, plumbing, electricity, carpentry, and painting. The position will minimal supervision and support small and midsize hospitals, critical access hospitals, small inpatient/outpatient facilities, and clinics. The Facility Systems Technician provides the necessary skill to operate, maintain, and repair various electrical/plumbing systems, movable equipment, physical plant equipment, furniture, walls, ceilings, and floors. Utilizes exceptional customer service and communication skills. The purpose of this position is to ensure a safe working environment and support an exceptional Environment of Care for Mercy.

Minimum Required Qualifications

Education: None

Licensure
  • Valid Drivers License for all Mercy locations
  • Mercy Arkansas Hospitals require High Pressure Boiler Operators License administered by Arkansas Dept. of Labor and Licensing where boilers are installed. Incumbents must have license. New hires must obtain licensure within 90 days of employment.
  • Mercy Hospital OKC requires Class III Boiler Operator's License administered by Oklahoma Dept. of Labor where boilers are installed. Incumbents must have license. New hires must obtain licensure within 90 days of employment.
  • Class C Tank Operator Training and Certification required for all Mercy locations. Must achieve certification within 90 days of employment.
  • EPA Universal Certification as required by 40CFR, Part 82, Subpart F for all Mercy locations. Must achieve certification within 12 months of employment.
  • Fire door maintenance training program with certificate of completion. Incumbents must have training. New hires will be required to complete training within 90 days of employment.
  • UL fire stop training with certificate of completion. Incumbents must have training. New hires will be required to complete training within 90 days of employment.
Experience

1 to 3 years commercial experience working with HVAC, boilers, and refrigeration equipment.

Certification/Registration
  • EPA approved Universal Certification for handling Refrigerants (within 12 months of employment)
Other Skills and Knowledge
  • Requires oral and written communication skills to communicate with customers and follow instructions.
  • Verbal ability required to read and understand technical manuals.
  • Numerical ability required to make calculations for testing, installation, measurement, estimation and repair of equipment.
  • Ability to prioritize work assignments, conceptualize and formulate finished product.
  • Form perception is required when measuring and installing parts and equipment.
  • Spatial ability required to understand forms and relationships when working from blueprints or specifications.
  • Requires knowledge and use of various computer software such as Outlook, TMS and/or Nuvolo.
  • Ability to manage time and materials efficiently. Completes work assignments in a high-quality manner and the lowest cost to Mercy.
  • Requires exceptional customer service skills and ability to achieve department goals.
  • Incumbent must achieve favorable results on both oral and written competency exam prior to advancing to Facility Systems Technician III.
  • Requires general manual dexterity, basic math knowledge, and mechanical aptitude.
  • Exposure to extreme temperatures, electric shock, and loud noise.
Preferred Qualifications
Education

High school diploma or equivalent preferred; 2 or more years of training in a Technical or Vocational School.

Licensure
  • Boiler, HVAC, or Refrigeration.
  • Electrical and/or Plumbing.
Experience

5 or more years working in a facility maintenance position within a healthcare environment.

Certification/Registration
  • Prefer training in NFPA 80 regulations for fire door inspection and maintenance.
  • Prefer training in UL standards for fire stopping.
  • ASSE 6040 training for medical gas maintenance.
