Responsibilities

  • Supervise Facility Operations and Fitness staff (35-50 students) and assess performance.
  • Hire, train, schedule, and approve timecards; cover open shifts as needed.
  • Oversee facility maintenance, equipment upkeep, and liaise with Facilities Management.
  • Coordinate event and rental support, including large-scale events and staff scheduling.
  • Develop, promote, and evaluate fitness programs; supervise instructors and trainers.
  • Ensure compliance with required certifications for staff and participants.

Education

Master’s degree in Kinesiology/Sports Management/Exercise Science/Recreation or related field
Bachelor’s degree in related field with 1 year of experience in recreational programs
4 years of experience in promotion/design/administration of recreational programs

Our faculty and staff are smart, dedicated people who work to create an excellent urban university experience for bright and motivated students.Job Summary:This position is a civil service employee that is primarily responsible for supervision of Campus Recreation facility operations, event and rental support, and fitness programs.Job Description:Staff SupervisionHire, train, schedule, supervise, and assess the Facility Operations and Fitness team (35-50 student staff, temporary employees, graduate assistants) ensuring all areas are properly staffed by trained personnel.Support the development of staff through coaching and mentorship.Responsible for approving timecards and preparing necessary documents/reports for bi-weekly payroll.Cover open shifts as needed within Building Operations and Fitness team.Facility & Fitness Equipment OperationsPeriodic inspections of internal and external activity areas, locker rooms, and restrooms, to provide security and ensure proper use and function of space.Oversee facility maintenance requests and liaison with Facilities Management and external vendors for routine repairs/requests.Oversee preventative maintenance program for fitness equipment at the PE Complex and Nest. Maintain accurate records of equipment inventory and usage.Serves as a point person in case of emergencies especially during nights and/or weekends.Oversees and collaborates with facilities and vendors on building and athletic field maintenance.Assists in the creation and adherence to the PE Complex / Campus Recreation staff and patron policies.Event & Rental SupportMonitor internal schedule of events, providing support to student building supervisors and staff where necessary, including large scale rentals and special events.Schedule operations and event support staff as needed.Serves as facility operations liaison between rentals and Campus Recreation.Work collaboratively with fellow staff in Campus Recreation supporting departmental events as needed.Fitness Programs OperationsDevelop, implement, promote, and evaluate fitness programs, including group fitness classes and personal training.Recruit, train, evaluate, and supervise fitness instructors and personal trainers.Ensure student, instructor, and personal trainer compliance with all required certifications.Collaborates with other NEIU departments serving on various professional development committees and representing Campus Recreation at NEIU events.Minimal Qualifications:1. Any one of the following, from the categories below:A. Master’s degree in a field relevant to the position (e.g., Kinesiology, Sports Management, Exercise Science, Recreation, or closely related field)ORB. Final semester or completed Graduate Assistantship with campus recreation or similar department performing duties for two (2) academic years consistent in area of specialization inherent to the position. *ORC. Bachelor’s degree in a field relevant to the position (e.g., Kinesiology, Sports Management, Exercise Science, Recreation, or closely related field) ANDOne (1) year (12 months) of work experience in the promotion, design, development, and/or administration of recreational programs.ORD. 4 years (48 months) of work experience in promotion, design, development, and/or administration of recreational programs, intercollegiate athletics, campus recreation, park district or similar organization that provides similar program.*Note: Students in the final semester of a Master’s Degree program, may be allowed to complete a credential examination and will receive full consideration, including being interviewed. An offer may be extended with understanding that proof of degree based on institution is provided to the employing institution Human Resources Office at least two weeks before the proposed start date.**Note: Newly hired employees may be required to obtain and/or maintain certifications in American Red Cross, CPR/AED/First Aid and Blood Borne Pathogens and similar certifications.Physical RequirementsAbility to work in a combination of office, fitness, and facilities environmentsAbility to lift up to 50 pounds and assist with equipment moving, including overhead liftingDepartmental Preferred QualificationsMaster’s degree in Recreation, Exercise Science, Sports Administration or closely related fieldDemonstrated experience in hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating part time staffDemonstrated experience implementing policies and proceduresDemonstrated experience in group fitness and/or personal trainingNationally recognized certification in personal training or group fitness (e.g., ACE, NASM, ACSM) or ability to obtain within 90 days of employmentExperience in collegiate/campus recreation facility and/or fitness operationsLocation: NEIU Main Campus (3600 W Foster Chicago, IL 60625)Work Schedule: Schedule dependent on operational needs. Some regular evenings and weekends may be required.
