Job summary

UNC-Chapel Hill’s Facilities Engineering invites applications for a Facilities Mechanical Engineer-Level II. The role focuses on mechanical and plumbing design review, construction administration, and guideline development across many projects.

You will also support maintenance teams and manage small projects as needed, with a strong emphasis on energy efficiency and code compliance. The ideal candidate holds a Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, with extensive experience in design

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in engineering design, project management (PM), & construction administration (CA).
  • Proficient in reviewing plans, specifications, cost estimates, life-cycle cost analyses, equipment submittals, value engineering decisions, contractor RFIs, change orders, etc.
  • Strong interpersonal & communication skills are important.
  • Substantial knowledge & experience with mechanical, plumbing, & energy ICC codes and standards.
  • Capable of simultaneously supporting dozens of projects in primary role while providing engineering throughout Facilities Services and serving as PM for a few projects at a time.
  • Valid driver’s license and NC driver’s license required prior to start date.

Responsibilities

  • Capital Project Oversight: provide peer reviews of in-house and external engineering designs, focus on UNC design guideline standards, coordinate with other departments, participate in design phase meetings and construction submittals, and support value engineering and RFIs.
  • Facility Engineering: provide engineering support for Building Services, Construction Services, and other departments; edit and maintain guidelines; lead guideline committees; assist maintenance staff; promote energy-efficient operation.
  • Project Management: provide design-bid-build PM services for informal, engineering-led projects; coordinate scope, budget, and schedule; manage bidding and close-out; supervise project delivery.
  • Design Services: develop drawings and specifications for construction by external contractors or in-house shops; ensure code compliance and functional requirements; coordinate with other trades; emphasize quality and maintainability.

Position Description Brief:

Join UNC-Chapel Hill's Facilities Engineering as a Facilities Mechanical Engineer-Level lI. Primary duties: support the capital project team through mechanical & plumbing (M&P) design review, construction administration review, & M&P design guideline development. Less frequent responsibilities: provide engineering support to maintenance team, provide small project design & project management services. $100K to $115K plus 37-days paid vacation and holidays and up to 12-days sick leave per year. Minimum Education or Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent education and experience

Minimum Qualifications and Competencies

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

  • Eight or more years of related experience in HVAC and plumbing - engineering design, PM, and CA.
  • Registered Professional Engineer in the State of NC.
  • Engineering experience with laboratory, classroom, dining, housing, athletic, and business occupancies, including both modern and historic buildings.
  • Experience with the requirements of the North Carolina State Construction Office and the UNC System Office.
  • Facilities maintenance and operations experience.
  • 25 vacation days/year (start accruing on the first day!) Up to 20 vacation days can carry over to the new year.
  • 12 holidays per year
  • 1 day/month sick leave (start accruing on the first day) Earn 12 sick days/yr. Sick days carry over year to year.

  • ·-Capital Project Oversite (60%): Provide peer reviews of in-house and external engineering designs at each submittal phase in a timely manner, uploading comments to the designated review software. Reviews should focus on adherence to UNC design guideline standards for functionality, reliability, constructability, maintainability, life expectancy, and energy efficiency. Coordinate review efforts with other Facilities Services departments to ensure consistency. Participate in design phase meetings and submit comments to the project team. During construction, participate in alternate selection and value engineering, review significant construction submittals, review critical requests for information (RFI), and other crucial documents as needed.
  • -Facility Engineering (15%): Provide engineering support for Building Services, Construction Services, and other departments, as requested. Edit and maintain the UNC-CH Plumbing and Mechanical Design Guidelines and lead the Plumbing and Mechanical Design Guideline Committee. Advocate for the development of standards in areas not currently addressed by the guidelines. Assist maintenance staff with technical challenges. Promote the operation of building systems that align with design intent, programmatic requirements, safety standards, and energy efficiency goals. Coordinate efforts with the in-house commissioning team and maintenance shops.
  • -Project Management (10%): Provide design-bid-build project management services for informal, engineering-led projects at UNC-Chapel Hill. Responsibilities include coordinating with campus stakeholders to develop project scope, budget, and schedule; contracting with external designers or leading in-house design; delivering complete construction documents; overseeing bidding, managing construction-phase budgets, and coordinating project close-out. Coordinate design and construction reviews with relevant internal and external agencies. Provide construction administration support related to design intent and supervise project close-out. Represent the University throughout the project, ensuring all work is delivered in accordance with university guidelines and the needs of campus customers.
  • -Design Services (10%): Develop drawings and specifications within your engineering discipline for construction by outside contractors or in-house construction shops. Design work must be completed in a timely manner and comply with applicable building codes, as well as State and University requirements. Coordinate with other trades. Designs must meet functional requirements, be constructible without significant modifications, and address life safety and code compliance. Design documents must be clear, consistent, and require minimal supplemental instruction or revision during construction. Designs should reflect institution-wide standards for quality, functionality, constructability, maintainability, versatility, and sustainability.
