Descripción del empleo

About Us

Working at the Naval Nuclear Laboratory we foster pride in belonging to an organization whose culture is made up of these core values: Trust, Empowerment, and Collaboration. Our company promotes a positive culture while ensuring the safety and reliability of our nation's naval nuclear reactors, and training the Sailors who operate those reactors in the U.S. Navy's submarines and aircraft carrier Fleets.

Job Description

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) Electrical Community Laboratories (ECL) maintain a range of Composite Test Facilities (CTFs) that support the qualification of Reactor Plant Instrumentation and Control (RPI&C) software and hardware. These facilities also enable rapid response to Fleet Support activities, support design project execution, and provide crew familiarization with RPI&C systems.

The Knolls Shipboard Electrical Systems (SES) System Infrastructure Development (SID) team is responsible for maintaining and modernizing the existing Type II RPI&C test system infrastructure at the Knolls site. In close collaboration with counterparts at Bettis, the team is also developing, testing, qualifying, and delivering the test system infrastructure for the next-generation TII+ RPI&C platform.

The SID team is seeking an experienced Facility Engineer to lead engineering efforts supporting this mission. The selected candidate will serve as the primary coordinator between KAPL crafts personnel and ECL organizations to plan and execute facility operations that support the CTFs. This role will ensure facility work scopes and schedules are effectively integrated with broader infrastructure activities required to maintain safe, reliable, and operational laboratory environments in support of project objectives.

In addition, the selected candidate may support management with collateral responsibilities, including hiring activities, procurement support, and routine facility and building operations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead facility planning and coordination efforts across multiple Composite Test Facilities.
  • Coordinate work scope and schedules between KAPL crafts personnel and ECL organizations.
  • Integrate facility activities with ongoing infrastructure maintenance and modernization efforts.
  • Ensure laboratory facilities remain operational, maintained, and capable of meeting project needs.
  • Review technical work, assess progress, and provide guidance to engineers and technologists.
  • Support team development and workforce growth initiatives.
  • Build and maintain productive relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Provide strategic direction and alignment regarding current and future work activities.
  • Assist with hiring, procurement activities, and other management-assigned duties as needed.
Leadership Expectations

This is a full-time Facility Engineer position with primary responsibility for facility leadership and oversight. While opportunities may exist to contribute directly to engineering tasks when workload permits, fulfilling the Facility Engineer responsibilities will remain the highest priority.

The successful candidate will provide leadership to a team of engineers and technologists by monitoring progress, reviewing technical work products, offering constructive feedback, and ensuring successful execution of facility-related objectives.

Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill

Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in a related technical, engineering or science field and a minimum of 9 years of relevant experience; or Masters degree from an accredited college or university in a related technical, engineering or science field and a minimum of 7 years of relevant experience; or Doctorate degree from an accredited college or university in a related technical, engineering, science field and a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience; or Currently a Principal Reactor Training Engineer, Refueling Engineer, or Field (RPCO) Engineer at the Company.
