Job summary

The J.M. Smucker Company in McCalla, AL is looking for a Technician in Facility/Utilities to manage the operation and maintenance of essential utility systems supporting food production. Job Overview

SMU recognizes this role as essential to operating utilities systems to support production of food products at the McCalla facility. This position manages operation and maintenance of steam boilers, thermal oxidizers, HVAC, wastewater treatment, compressed air, refrigeration, and related plant utilities while ensuring compliance with safety and environmental regulations.

Responsibilities

• Operate and maintain steam boilers, thermal oxidizer, compressed air, ammonia & glycol refrigeration, HVAC, wastewater treatment, and general facility equipment.
• Monitor system performance, record data, perform preventive maintenance (PM) and corrective actions, and update documentation such as PSM, PM logs, and water/wastewater records.
• Conduct safety checks and comply with OSHA/EPA and the company safety program.
• Participate in failure analysis and lead team efforts to resolve equipment failures.
• Perform general facility maintenance including office repair, roof leak repair, and lighting replacement.
• Assist other plant departments as needed and support daily operations.

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Ability to wear Level A suit (SCBA) and conduct tasks in confined spaces.
• Strong communication, reading and comprehension of safety and operational documents.
• Experience in mechanical/maintenance operations in a manufacturing setting.
• Ability to work independently, in teams, and lead efforts to improve outcomes.
• Physical capability to lift up to 65 lbs, stand, walk, kneel, squat, and climb.
• Night shift availability, 12‑hour rotating shift, overtime, weekends, and holidays.

Desired Qualifications

• Technical degree in HVAC, mechanical, or related field.
• Experience with HVAC, combustion, refrigeration systems and food manufacturing.
• Familiarity with Oracle and utility plant controls/instrumentation.

Physical Requirements

Lift and carry up to 65 lbs, perform repetitive actions, stand, walk, enter confined spaces, push, pull, kneel, squat, climb, reach, and feel.
