Job summary

The Town of Warrenton is seeking a part-time Facilities Technician to maintain parks, facilities, and equipment, ensuring cleanliness, safety, and readiness for rentals and events.

Responsibilities include routine custodial work, inspections, basic to advanced diagnostics across mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems, and cooperation with town programs and emergency responses as needed.

Qualifications

Position Overview

The Capital Asset Management Facility Technician performs skilled and semi-skilled maintenance work supporting Town parks, facilities, equipment, and other assets. While primarily assigned to Town parks and recreational amenities, responsibilities may include work at any Town-owned facility or property based on operational needs. Duties include maintaining park restrooms, emptying trash, monitoring property conditions, performing routine maintenance and repairs, and supporting the overall cleanliness, safety, and appearance of Town properties. The position may also assist with mechanical, electrical, plumbing, structural, lighting, and other facility systems; operate tools and light equipment; and support special projects, events, and other Capital Asset Management assignments as needed.

Facility Technician I duties include, but are not limited to:

This position primarily supports the daily maintenance, cleanliness, safety, and operational upkeep of Town parks, trails, restrooms, playgrounds, pavilions, and recreational amenities, while also supporting maintenance needs at other Town facilities and properties as assigned.

• Parks & Facility Maintenance: Performs custodial, general maintenance, and repair activities including restroom cleaning and sanitizing, trash and debris removal, graffiti removal, painting, minor carpentry and masonry, and other tasks necessary to maintain clean, safe, and functional Town parks and facilities.
• Inspections & Preventative Maintenance: Conducts routine inspections and preventative maintenance of parks, facilities, recreational amenities, equipment, signs, and other Town assets; identifies and reports safety, maintenance, vandalism, or operational concerns and assists with corrective action.
• Repairs & Troubleshooting: Performs basic to advanced diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, structural, lighting, HVAC, and other facility systems and equipment consistent with the employee's assigned Facility Technician level, training, and experience.
• Park & Operational Support: Prepares pavilions, facilities, and recreational amenities for rentals, programs, and public use and assists with Town events, including setup, breakdown, cleanup, and other operational needs.
• Tools, Equipment & Materials: Safely operates applicable hand and power tools, light equipment, and diagnostic equipment; loads and transports materials, supplies, tools, and equipment; and assists with maintaining appropriate inventories and work areas.
• Safety & Compliance: Follows applicable policies, safety procedures, and occupational safety practices; uses required personal protective equipment (PPE); and maintains accurate records of inspections, maintenance activities, work performed, parts, materials, and time.
• Weather & Emergency Response: Assists with snow and ice removal and responds to urgent maintenance needs involving accidents, storm debris, vandalism, facility failures, or other conditions requiring immediate attention.
• Additional Duties: Assists with maintenance and repair needs throughout Town-owned facilities and properties and performs other Capital Asset Management duties, special projects, and related tasks as assigned.

Facilities Mechanic II position duties include Level I duties in addition to, but not limited to:

This position performs more advanced troubleshooting and independently diagnoses and repairs mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, traffic signal/sign, and other specialized facility systems and equipment.

• Knowledge & Safety: Advanced mechanical knowledge and troubleshooting skills. Experience with diagnosing and repairing complex mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, and electrical issues in a wide variety of various facility equipment, signs, and traffic signals.
• Manual/General Labor: Diagnose and repair various types of e specialty equipment including but not limited to traffic lights, signs, plumbing systems, etc. Inspect, repair, replace, and mount electrical components and fixtures. Perform specialized tasks such as HVAC diagnosis, treatment pumps and associated equipment.
• Equipment Operations: Extensive experience with applicable diagnostic tools and equipment.
• Administration/Compliance: Knowledge of policies related to facilities maintenance operations. Knowledge of occupational hazards and appropriate safety practices. Maintain accurate records of maintenance, parts usage, time, and materials.

Facilities Mechanic III position duties include Level I and II duties in addition to, but not limited to:

This position performs advanced diagnosis and repair of major building and equipment systems, including roofing, electrical panels, high- and low-voltage systems, three-phase systems, traffic signal systems, computer-controlled systems, control wiring, VFD programming, and other complex systems.

• Knowledge & Safety: Advanced mechanical knowledge and troubleshooting skills. Diagnoses and repairs major component systems of buildings, roofing systems, electrical panels, and high voltage 1ph/3ph systems, low voltage, three-phase, signposts and structural bases, traffic light systems, and complex computer-controlled systems. Additional knowledge of control wiring, VFD Programming, and troubleshooting.

Education & Experience

Level 1

Grade 8

Education - High School Diploma (HSD) or General Equivalency Degree (GED)

Experience - Minimum of three (3) years of experience of maintenance and repair on various facility equipment, signs, and signals.

Level II

Grade 9

Education - High School Diploma (HSD) or General Equivalency Degree (GED)

Experience - Minimum of six (6) years of experience of maintenance and repair on various facility equipment, signs, and traffic signals.

Level III

Grade 10

Education - High School Diploma (HSD) or General Equivalency Degree (GED)

Experience - Minimum of nine (9) years of experience of maintenance and repair on various facility equipment, signs, and traffic signals.

Certifications / Licensures

All Levels - Valid Virginia (VA) Driver's License - Must have upon hire. If relocating to VA, a valid VA drivers’ license is required to be obtained within 1 year from date of hire.

Level II - Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) - Must have or must be able to obtain and maintain within one (1) year from date of hire

Success Framework.

• Knowledge of park and facility maintenance practices, including cleaning procedures, preventative maintenance, repair techniques, materials, supplies, and equipment.
• Skill in the safe use and operation of hand tools, power tools, light equipment, diagnostic equipment, and other tools used in park and facility maintenance.
• Ability to inspect, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair park amenities, facility systems, equipment, signs, and other Town assets consistent with the employee's assigned Facility Technician level, training, and experience.
• Knowledge of occupational safety standards and practices and the ability to safely perform maintenance activities in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments.
• Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, specifications, equipment instructions, and other maintenance-related information.
• Ability to use computers, tablets/iPads, facility and asset management systems, Microsoft Office, and other applicable software; accurately document inspections, work performed, time, materials, and service history.
• Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with supervisors, employees, Town officials, contractors, vendors, and members of the public and prepare clear and concise reports or documentation.
• Ability to exercise independent judgment, prioritize assigned work, perform duties with limited direct supervision, and work effectively as part of a team.
• Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods and work indoors and outdoors in varying weather and environmental conditions.

Work Schedule

• This is a part-time position generally scheduled for 29 hours per week.
• Flexible hours may include a combination of weekdays, evenings and weekends depending on facility needs
• Holiday work or adjusted hours for special events may be requested
