Job summary

The Museum of Life and Science in Durham, NC seeks a Facilities Technician I to support safe, functional, and welcoming facilities for guests and staff. You will perform routine preventive maintenance, basic repairs across multiple trades, and document work in the CMMS.

Schedule is Sunday–Wednesday, 7:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m., with occasional emergency response outside scheduled hours. Prior experience in maintenance and building trades is preferred using standard hand and power tools.

Qualifications

• Previous experience performing basic maintenance, facilities or related work.
• Experience in carpentry, painting/drywall, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, HVAC, welding, or hardscape work.
• Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, equipment, and vehicles.
• Ability to follow written and verbal work instructions and communicate safety information.
• Ability to perform basic calculations and measurements.
• Demonstrate high mental acuity.
• Ability to use email, mobile devices, and CMMS for assignments and documentation.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• General skills in computer basics, internet, and MS Office.
• Recognize when specialized expertise or contractor support is needed.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs to buildings, equipment, and infrastructure within training and skill level.
• Carry out basic work across multiple building trades as needed.
• Complete work orders safely and document work in the CMMS.
• Identify additional maintenance needs and create appropriate CMMS work orders.
• Escalate specialized needs to Facilities leadership promptly.
• Take initiative on unassigned work orders while coordinating priorities.
• Respond promptly to facilities-related requests from staff and guests and provide updates.
• Assist with opening/closing procedures and ensure building systems operate safely.
