Job summary

Florida State Fair Authority is seeking a detail-oriented Facilities Technician to help maintain the fairground’s buildings and equipment. The role emphasizes HVAC maintenance, general repairs, installation work, and on-call support for emergencies and events.

You will collaborate with the Facilities Supervisor and other trades to plan daily tasks, ensure safety, and keep facilities clean and ready for operations. This is a full-time on-site position requiring weekend coverage.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3–5 years of experience with HVAC and general facilities maintenance.
  • High School diploma or equivalent required; HVAC Certification a plus.
  • Plumbing and Electrician Licenses are advantageous for this role.

Responsibilities

  • Perform general maintenance and repairs to keep facilities safe and functional.
  • Collaborate with Facilities Supervisor to plan daily tasks and projects.
  • Install and repair building components (doors, panels, floors, bulletin boards) and manage related tasks.
  • Move heavy objects, operate high-reach equipment, and use specialty tools for projects.
  • Maintain organized workshop and report maintenance issues promptly.
  • Prepare surfaces for plaster/cement work, seal joints, and waterproof where needed.
  • Support emergency maintenance, attend rotating weekend schedule, and assist other tasks.

Are you a hands-on problem solver with experience in HVAC and a talent for keeping buildings, equipment, and facilities in great condition? The Florida State Fair Authority is looking for a Facilities Technician to join our team and help maintain one of Tampa Bay’s most unique and dynamic properties.

We’re looking for someone with a strong background in HVAC, along with a broad range of general maintenance and repair skills. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys variety and isn’t afraid to roll up their sleeves. From building installations and general repairs to surface preparation, equipment operation, and emergency maintenance needs, no two days are exactly alike.

Working closely with the Facilities Manager and other maintenance trades, you’ll play an important role in keeping our facilities safe, comfortable, functional, clean, and ready for everything from everyday operations to major events.

SUMMARY

The Facilities Technician is responsible for maintaining and enhancing the fairground facilities through a variety of general repairs, installations, and maintenance tasks. This role collaborates with the Facilities Supervisor to efficiently complete daily projects, supports emergency and on-call services, and ensures a clean and organized work environment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Perform a wide range of general maintenance and repairs to ensure fairground facilities are well-maintained, protecting infrastructure and reducing operational costs.
  2. Collaborate with the Facilities Supervisor to plan and efficiently complete daily tasks and projects, coordinating with other maintenance trades as needed.
  3. Install and repair building components such as doors, cabinets, paneling, flooring, and bulletin boards, as well as manage tasks like demolition, roof repairs, and sprinkler head counts.
  4. Assist with moving heavy objects, operate high-reach equipment, and use specialized tools and equipment, including airless sprayers, striping machines, and sanders, for various projects.
  5. Maintain an organized and clean workshop environment, ensure proper care of tools and equipment, and report any maintenance issues.
  6. Enhance property quality by preparing surfaces for plaster or cement work, taping sheetrock joints, caulking, waterproofing walls, and sealing floor cracks.
  7. Provide support for emergency maintenance services as required.
  8. Participate in a rotating weekend schedule.
  9. Perform additional maintenance duties and support other tasks as assigned.

Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION/CERTIFICATIONS:

High School diploma or equivalent required. Minimum of three to five years of experience with HVAC, general facilities and maintenance work. The following are a plus: HVAC Certification, Plumbing and Electrician Licenses.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Ability to identify problems and implement solutions with the understanding of working efficiently to complete tasks
  • Good communication skills both verbally and written
  • Intermediate Math skills (calculate figures/discounts, proportions, area, etc.)
  • Ability to work independently in the absence of a supervisor
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORKING CONDITIONS:

Duties are mostly performed outside of an office environment. Must have ability to stand, sit, hear, taste/smell, use hands, walk, talk, have depth perception and reach with hands and arms. Also need to have the ability to stoop, kneel, crawl and crouch, and climb or balance. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. There is occasional exposure to environmental demands including wet/humid weather, working in high, precarious places, being exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme temperatures (non-weather), and risk of electrical shock. There is also work near mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, and exposure to outdoor weather conditions.
