Job summary

The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is seeking a Facilities Technician to support day-to-day operation, maintenance, and repair of its facilities, building systems, and infrastructure.

Reporting to the Engineering team, the technician will perform maintenance on mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and related systems, follow CMMS work orders, and assist with renovation projects across museum properties while ensuring safety and regulatory compliance.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree, technical training, or equivalent experience in HVAC, electrical, mechanical systems, plumbing, process controls, or a related field.
  • Three to five years of experience in commercial building maintenance, facilities operations, HVAC maintenance, or a related trade.
  • Experience in HVAC, electrical systems, or plumbing preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical manuals, and code requirements.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to meet the museum’s driving requirements.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 100 pounds and work at heights up to 40 feet.

Responsibilities

  • Complete preventive maintenance activities and work orders through the museum’s CMMS.
  • Assist with renovation, repair, and maintenance projects across museum properties.
  • Conduct inspections of equipment, systems, and facilities to identify maintenance needs and ensure operational efficiency.
  • Coordinate with and monitor contract vendors performing work on museum property.
  • Follow all safety procedures, policies, and regulatory requirements while maintaining a safe work environment.
  • Support the Engineering team with additional maintenance and facilities-related responsibilities as needed.

The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is seeking a Facilities Technician. This position plays an important role in supporting the day-to-day operation, maintenance, and repair of the museum’s facilities, building systems, and infrastructure.

Working as part of the Engineering team, the Facilities Technician helps ensure that museum buildings and systems operate safely, efficiently, and reliably. The position performs maintenance and repair work on mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and building systems while supporting preventive maintenance programs and facilities projects across museum properties.

Key Responsibilities

Perform routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and related building systems.

Monitor and support building automation and management systems to help maintain proper environmental conditions throughout museum facilities.

Complete preventive maintenance activities and work orders through the museum’s computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).

Assist with renovation, repair, and maintenance projects across museum properties.

Conduct inspections of equipment, systems, and facilities to identify maintenance needs and ensure operational efficiency.

Coordinate with and monitor contract vendors performing work on museum property.

Follow all safety procedures, policies, and regulatory requirements while maintaining a safe work environment.

Support the Engineering team with additional maintenance and facilities-related responsibilities as needed.

Qualifications

Associate degree, technical training, vocational training, or equivalent experience in HVAC, electrical, mechanical systems, plumbing, process controls, or a related field.

Three to five years of experience in commercial building maintenance, facilities operations, HVAC maintenance, or a related trade.

Experience in one or more of the following areas preferred:

HVAC

Electrical systems

Plumbing

Working knowledge of building systems, work order management systems, and preventive maintenance programs.

Familiarity with fire and life safety systems and procedures.

Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical manuals, and code requirements.

Strong customer service and communication skills with the ability to interact professionally with staff, contractors, vendors, and visitors.

Valid driver’s license and ability to meet the museum’s driving requirements.

Physical Requirements

This position requires frequent standing, walking, climbing, bending, lifting, and carrying. The successful candidate must be able to lift and move up to 100 pounds, work from ladders and lifts, and perform work at heights of up to approximately 40 feet.

Full-time position

Non-Exempt

Eligible for overtime in accordance with applicable law

Schedule may include occasional evenings, weekends, or emergency response support as operational needs require

Compensation

Our compensation philosophy values both market competitiveness and internal fairness, ensuring that every employee’s contribution is recognized and rewarded.

Starting Salary Range: $22.48-25.32 per hour (commensurate with experience and qualifications)
